50's Party (8 y.o. girl)
For my daughter's 8th birthday we had a 50's theme party. Having had many 'luncheon' parties over the years we decided to do a later afternoon party. Invitations were made on the computer inviting the girls for a "rockin' good time". A jukebox and other 50's memorabilia decorated the invitation. Our whole family dressed in 50's garb and greeted the guests. My daughter was given a 'poodle' skirt, pink gloves, ponytail scarf, pink wool cardigan and sweater chain for the day... She looked the part. When each girl arrived they were given their party gifts at the beginning instead of the end of the party. They consisted of a goody bag and a vest. The goody bag had a mini tube of bright red lipstick, some bubble gum, a big ring, and clip on earrings. The vests were easy to make and cheaper than the original felt skirts I wanted to make for each girl...(Felt is expensive!) The vests were powder pink felt with a black felt poodle on the back. Each poodle had a 'diamond' collar and 'silver (ribbon)' leash. The girl's initials were sewen on the left breast of their vests. Our house was decorated with 50's party cutouts and plastic records hanging from the ceiling. A friend of ours volunteered to teach the girls how to jive so they were given dance lessons and giggled and sweated to the 50's music blasting through our home. Other activities included a bubble gum bubble blowing contest, hula-hoop contest, and a 50's version of the 'pin-the-tail on the donkey'. My husband hunted down an Elvis poster and we placed it on our patio doors. The girls put on their bright lipstick, were blind-folded, spun around and had to kiss Elvis. Whoever got closest to his lips won... This was a huge hit with the girls who were still wary of boys but thought Elvis pretty cute! After the games we had afternoon treats... In our kitchen we created a "soda fountain". Our round kitchen table was covered with a bright 50's fucshia table cloth and a fold-out sundae/soda decorated the table along with as many sundae toppings as we could find, parfait glasses, long spoons and turquoise napkins. The girls were extremely creative with their sundaes! The birthday cake was a bright fuschia cake with a "record" (made out of black icing" on the top. 2 jive dancers were on top of the record and "Happy Birthday Cass" was the record label. Small 45's decorated the side of the cake. After cake and sundaes the gifts were opened. Everyone had a "Rockin good time".
