Roaring '20's Party!
This year we're planning a '20's theme party for my daughter who will turn nine. I made the invitations in black and white (to mimic the silent films) and download pictures of flappers, Model T cars and Charleston dancers to use as graphics. The invitation is written in '20's slang, such as "23 Skidoo...We Want You to come celebrate Rebecca's Birthday. Calling all sheiks and flappers to a ritzy party. It'll be the cat's meow! Just say "JOE SENT ME" at the door. I'll cast a kitten if you can't come!" On the back there is a translation of the slang! The decorations will be mainly black and silver-tone. PartyMaster.com actually has some 1920's party goods, such as banners, honeycombed centerpieces, stand up flappers, posters, etc. I also ordered from Silents are Golden online several 8x10s of silent film stars to use as decor. My daughter and I will dress as flappers, with fringed dresses, pearls and feathered handbands...dad will be a gangster with a pinstriped suit and hat. We'll greet guests at the door, asking them for the speakeasy password ("JOE SENT ME") When the guests arrive, they'll be given a feathered headband and a long string of pearls. I'll start the party (as I always do) with a story. There are actually two different Cinderella stories available from amazon.com illustrated in the '20's style! After reading, I'll use a reference book to point out some of the '20's highlights (keeping away from the political and violent!) I'll focus on fashion, flappers, dance crazes, silly fads such as flagpole sitting, Model T cars, etc. I plan to teach them the basic moves of the Charleston, and we'll have a dance contest to the music. There are several roaring twenties CDs available from amazon, too. For the craft, we'll decorate inexpensive CD holders, as music was important in the twenties. For food, I plan on serving snack foods that were "invented" in the twenties, such as Velveeta cheese and crackers, several candy bars (Mounds, Reese's and others were invented in the '20's). We'll drink sparkling cider in martini glasses, too. Other activities may include a mock Miss America pageant (started in the 1920's) and/or a Model T car race. I ordered (but haven't received) two Model T toy cars. We'll definitely playing Roaring '20's dictionary, a favorite party game at our house, using words like flapper, Charleston, Model T, cat's meow, etc. The treat bags are black glossy bags, and I used the same graphics from the invitations to make a sign to glue on each bag that states "Rebecca's Twenties Treats." Inside I will have a Pez (invented in the twenties), several of the candy bars, an activity book I made up using puzzlemaker.com, a 1920's information booklet I typed up, and a copy of the Olsen twins book "Flapper Napper." We're looking forward to a "swell" party!
