I'd like to suggest a "Rockin' Fifties" party.
Invitations: Cut out a circle of black paper. Add three small white circles for the finger holes. Cut out another circle equal in size to the black one, and attach it to the back of the black circle. Print the party information inside on the white piece. This should come out looking somewhat like a bowling ball. Decorations: Cut out little record and guitar shapes and hang them from the ceiling. If you are able to, draw a few little jukeboxes and paste them on to small boxes. You can store your tapes and CD's for the party in them. Food: This is easy. Just serve the "All-American Favorite" of hamburgers and fries. Don't dare forget the chocolate shakes! Cake: Bake a chocolate or white cake. Either will do well, but you must ice with chocolate frosting! Just bake the cake of your choice in a single or double layer circle. Ice with the chocolate frosting. Carefully grate the cake top in a clockwise motion with a fork, each time you go 'round move in a fork-space. Lastly, for the birthday boy or girl, cut out a small circle and punch a hole in the middle. Invent a song title using their name, and write it on the circle. Place this in the center of the cake top. Now you have a perfect, easy to make record cake! Games: For games, if you are able, use your own backyard. Play the egg pass where you have to use spoons to pass the egg. Teach the guests how to do "The Twist", "Mashed Potato", or "The Bop". They'll love to go home and try their new moves out with Mom and Dad. Play "Spin the Bottle" with a new twist. Instead of kissing, the two plays that got pointed to have to dance together doing one of the dances you taught them. Music: Just dig out your old records and tapes. If you weren't alive in the 50's, just borrow some music from Mom. Use hits from Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Bill Hailey and the Comets, the Marvels, etc. Dress: Tell the guests in the invitation to wear 50's clothing. Ex: Girls can wear skirts, button up blouses, scarves, and sunglasses. Boys can wear rolled up jeans, bobby socks, plaid shirts and saddle shoes. Most clothing items given are pretty easy to come up with. I still have my old poodle skirt. Favors: Use candy! Just buy a big bag of the mixed stuff and fill up small brown paper sacks. As a craft, kids can decorate their own. For girls, throw in a small scarf or sunglasses. For boys, a comb or small wallet. I hope someone will try this! I have and I know it always stays in conversations for years to come!
