Amazing Race Party 7yr

June 2006

Debbie in Clarksville, MD USA

We had an Amazing Race birthday party for my 7 year old son who LOVES the Amazing Race.  On the invitation, we were able to duplicate the look of an Amazing Race clue with the yellow and black stripes and the on black stripe wrote "Josh's Amazing Race" with "Race" being on the second line and in much bigger letters (like in the show).  I had divided the kids up ahead of time (to try to keep the rowdy kids on different teams)and assigned each kid to a team. I found solid color t-shirts on sale at Michael's for 2.49 each and bought them for the teams. (We had the pink team (all 4 girls at the party), the green team, the grey team, the royal blue team and the light blue team).  I also bought t-shirt transfer kits and was going to put the design from the invitation (saying "Josh's Amazing Race") and the date of the party on the shirt, but we ran out of time. I did do a special shirt, though, for my son, the birthday boy.  When the kids arrived at the party, we told them which team they were on and gave them a t-shirt.  We used red and yellow contact paper to cover shoe boxes to put the clues in (to look like the clue markers on the show)and placed them around the neighborhood. I had gotten the OK ahead of time from my neighbors to use their driveways and included the address with each task.  Our stops included: the Verizon Center in Washington, DC (home of the Washington Wizards) where the teams had to make 10 basketball baskets with the team members taking turns shooting; Draw Mountain, British Columbia, Canada where the teams had to draw Josh a birthday picture (which after the party I put in an album as a keepsake for him); Ketchikan, Alaska where the team members had to throw and catch the ball 10 times without dropping it; the Garment District of New York City, New York where the team members had to put on a pile of oversized clothes (my husband's button down shirt, shorts with suspenders, socks, rain boots and a cowboy hat) and run/walk quickly to the next team member in line, whereupon he would take off all the oversize clothes and pass them to the next team member to do the same; Waterloo, Iowa where team members had to dip a large spoon (or ladel) into a bucket of water and carry the spoonful of water 10 feet away to a large cup which the team needed to fill; and a detour at Joshuatown, CT: where teams had the choice between finding 10 of 20 words hidden in a word search (all words had to do with Josh) or answer 7 of 20 trivia questions about Josh.  I arranged the tasks so that each team was at a different station first, that way the teams didn't overlap too much. After their 6th task, all teams were sent back to Josh's house where we had pizza waiting for them for lunch.  The whole race took about 45 min. to an hour. Some tasks were longer (the clothes took the longest) while some were quicker.  Overall, the kids all had an "Amazing" time at my son's birthday party!
