For my daughter's 5th birthday she wanted a Pioneer theme to go along with her newfound love of the American Girls. Mainly Kirsten. We got her the doll, of course,( as one of her gifts) but I was unsure on how to do the rest of the party. With some research I found a real working homestead in our area. The lady that now runs the place agreed to let me rent out part of the yard so that we could hold her party there. For the invitations, I found some Little house on The Prairie postcards. they had a picture of Laura looking out into the distance so it was very Kirsten-like. My daughter dressed in a custom made outfit that looked just like Kirsten's and all the other children arrived wearing long flowy dresses. (that was the closest we could come up with, I did have them aprons, however). The decorations weren't really needed as the location was true 1800's. Food was easy. Classic fried chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuits, pork rinds took place of the cracklin's, and corn on the cob. Her cake was a half sheet cake with a 3 D log cabin sitting on top, also made out of cake. this was made by a local bakery that turned out so beautifully. Party favors were in wicker baskets. They included homemade banana bread wrapped in cloth, rag dolls, Jacobs ladders, and a mason jar full of candy. I think the candy was the most difficult, since my daughter refused to use anything except candy that was around in Kirsten's time period. We used Beeman's gum, old fashion taffy, and other various items we found at the local candy store. As far as activities, these were easy as well. The homestead in on 83 acres. We took a hike, played the hoop game, and since the main house is a museum, we took a tour in there as well as the other buildings (there are 14 in all). My daughter loved her birthday and still talks about it! We all thought it was cool haning the place to ourselves! Finding a party that entertains the range of children's ages that attend her parties is always a challenge. This worked out perfectly, even the adults had a blast taking a step back in time. I hope my idea helped!
