For my daughter's eighth birthday, we had an American Girl Doll Sleepover Party.
The preparation was just as much fun as the party! She and her siblings (sister 11, brother 6) assisted in making doll sized plates, pretzels, pizza, cake and cookies using Crayola's Model Magic. We also took white Model Magic and pressed into the caps from water bottles. Then using either multi-colored or all brown seed beads, we carefully placed the beads in the white Model Magic for cereal bowls. The clear caps from the water bottles became the OJ cups with a little orange (mixed red and yellow) Model Magic. For the invitations, we used a picture of my daughter holding her dolls with a fun font that we changed colors every line so it looked like a rainbow. We told everyone to bring a doll, their sleeping bag, toothbrush, hairbrush, pjs, clothes, their doll's sleeping bag, toothbrush, hairbrush, pjs and clothes. The girls thought it was great. Many brought their own "bags" with their dolls. When the girls arrived, the dolls were sat at the special doll table (a piece of hard board set on lego table legs with a baby blanket over it as a tablecloth) where they could serve their dolls pizza and treats before they came to the big table which was similarly set. We started the party around 7 and served pizza around 7:30. The girls put on their pjs and their doll's pjs and they settled in to watch "Sleepover" with the girl from Spy Kids. They thought it was hysterical. By the time the movie was over, it was time for Mom to go to bed. I told them they could stay awake as long as they were quiet. And they were. For breakfast, they all had cereal – including the dolls! Everyone had fun getting dressed and doing their hair. They played with the dolls and made a little "house" on the floor for them. They also played "salon" with the dolls and made a nail station and a hair station. When parents came to pick up the girls (before lunch), they each received a customized goodie box with their name on it (we used empty flushable wipe boxes that we'd saved. My daughter wrote everyone's name and drew hearts and swirlies with Sharpie markers). The boxes contained butterfly hair clips – girl and doll sized, apples – doll and girl sized, and a small stuffed animal for each doll all wrapped in fancy tissue paper. I made sure to tell the Moms how we made stuff so that they could do it at home too. Everyone was thrilled at how easy things were and how well things flowed. My niece has insisted we help with her next party!
