American Idol Party  This party theme can be used for almost any age as long as the children can read. Set up a karaoke machine (you can get them at Toy's R Us and Walmart for a reasonable price that hook up to your tv set or you may be able to rent one or have a DJ come to your party, depending on your budget and space available) and have the children sing solo or in groups, but have them perform as comically as possible. Have the adults as judges. The fun part is to give positive praise for each contestant even though the contestants were trying to be silly, but have a "Simon Cowell" who gives funny comments about each performance.  Offer prizes to all contestants, but a grand prize for the funniest performance, funniest costume, funniest dance, etc. Offer costumes and accessories like large costume jewelry (for boys and girls), wigs, fake fur boas and huge sunglasses, or spiked collars, and bright colored rock & roll hair wigs, and fake tattoos for the boys, for example. You can find a lot of fun things to do this at your local Goodwill or consignment store, or Hobby Lobby. A variation of this is to let the other children choose each of the contestants song, costume, accessories, which will end up even funnier (not making any child embarrassed or uncomfortable, of course - some children are shy - you can always have them help with the important job of picking the songs and help dj). Make sure to have a collection of many popular songs so that each child knows at least some of the songs (and above all that they are age-appropriate). There are many ways to customize this party theme to suit your child and his/her friends.  Make sure you videotape the party, if possible as it is a blast for the children to watch later, even in years to come. It is sure to be a success!
