9 year old Reptile Party
My son's love of reptiles and a yellow pages ad for a traveling reptile show were the inspiration for this party. We sent out computer generated invitations inviting all to a Reptile Birthday Party. I decorated with a tropical look inside and outside using decorations left over from a recent luau and tons of reptile related objects belonging to my son. Since it was July I was able to plan indoor and outdoor activities scheduled to run approx. 2 hours. As the guests arrived they were handed a pair of paper reptile glasses(Oriental Trading)and sent outside for some free play while the presenter had a chance to set up inside without interruption. I put out Reptile Punch (green gatorade, sherbert and pineapple soda)and Snake sandwiches (Using a loaf of French bread, fill with various lunch meats and cut into 1-2" slices. Arrange the slices into a snake shape and garnish with skewered black and green olives for spots. A slice of pimento can be used on one end to resemble a tongue). With this set up the guests were able to help themselves throughout the party. Once all had arrived the presenter began her show. All were mesmerized by the 15-20 various snakes, lizards, turtles, and insects presented. It was both educational and fun. Next, the children took part in a reptile egg hunt. Each guest was given a paper with clues and was asked to name the reptile being described and then find that egg (labeled egg-shaped cardboard hidden earlier throughout the backyard). The first person to locate an egg for each reptile clue was the winner. This turned out to be a well received challenge. Our last activity before cake was a pull string piņata. Although it was quick the kids had a blast scurrying and comparing piņata goodies. As we sang Happy Birthday (ice cream cake decorated with plastic reptiles) everyone wore their glasses. This made for a great group photo! Lastly, on their way out guests were handed a goody bag made from brown lunch bags tied with twine and a handmade thank you note. Since everything I used was so easy to obtain, this was not a difficult party to plan.
