ARMY VEHICLE & CONSTRUCTION TRUCK party My boys turned six and two and the oldest loves Army tanks and humvees while the two year old loves "big, big trucks". Their home-made invitations read: "ATTENTION ARMY TROOPS AND TRUCK FANS! You're invited to join (kid's names) for Birthday Party Basic Training" Inside read: "Please report to duty on (date) at (time) at the (last name) family construction site and Army field. Soldiers age 5+ are welcome to set up camp in the outdoor tent and return to home base the following morning." I decorated with a hand-drawn poster of a tank, hummer, dump truck and bulldozer and placed green balloons and U.S. flags on the back porch and garage and also had dump truck and hummer balloons inside. I spent a lot of time downloading clipart of Army vehicles, construction trucks and monster trucks and cut-and-pasted the clipart on stickers which I printed out and placed on green tablecloths. I saved some stickers and placed them on personalized brown paper bags for treat bags and (for little girls I used Barbie vehicle stickers) set some stickers inside the treat bags for the kids to take home. Other treat bag party favors included: Army parachute men, compass rings, mini squirt guns, tank stampers, and little Army trucks (bracelets and hair accessories for girls instead of trucks). All the kids were under 10 years old except for one who was 13 and we gave him an Army camouflage pen and an autographed Army Nascar hat. My husband is a Captain in the Army so he let the children climb in his humvee which was a big hit and he set up a big tent for any kids who wanted to camp out. We played an audio tape of military cadences to set the mood. Games included "Captain says" which is similar to Simon says, and dump truck relay (two teams had to race to the other side of the yard, pick up five rocks, return to next team member and dump the rocks). The little guests also enjoyed riding my boys' toy tractor, bike and tricycle around construction cones. Then, the kids hit a tank pinata and threw 'grenade' water balloons. The food I served included mini tacos and sandwiches, chips, fruit and veggie sticks, drinks, and ice cream and cake. I made two cakes. The six-year old's cake was made from a fudge marble cake mix and I turned the yellow mix into olive green with a mixture of food coloring so the inside looked like camouflage. I used chocolate icing and had Army men, a U.S. flag and two tanks on it. For my two-year old's cake I used butter pecan cake mix and butter cream icing. I turned the icing green with food coloring to look like grass. Then, I placed four little construction vehicles around it. One thing I forgot to do was to crumble Oreo cookies on the top to look like dirt on top of the cake. All the guests (including adults) really seemed to have a good time.
