We had an ARMY party for our 6 yr old son.
I hand wrote the invitations on army colored paper. They were like this: Private (child's name you are invitating) YOUR BOOT CAMP ORDERS: Draft notice for: TOP SECRET MILITARY MISSION DALLAS' 6TH BIRTHDAY PARTY Location: SECRET (our last name) MILITARY BASE (classified directions given when you RSVP at (phone #).) Date: (date of party) Time: 1500 hours - 1700 hours (3-5pm civilian time) Privates: Please report for basic training wearing your camo fatigues and prepare to get dirty. Parents: The kids will probably get wet and dirty, so feel free to bring a change of clothes and a towel. Also, if your child does not have camo fatigues any attire will do. We set up a boot camp in our back yard. We started at our swingset and took one of the swings off. We tied a rope where the swing had been and the kids had to swing on the rope across a pool of water below. Then we had set up barrels we had spray painted camo colors and they had to crawl through the barrels. Then they had to run through some tires laid on the ground. Then they crawled through some tires we had screwed to a sheet of plywood. Then they had to climb over a small wall my husband had made from some old scrap pieces of wood. Then we attached rope to wooden stakes for them to crawl under on the ground(like the barbed wire they crawl under in the army only safer). Then the last part of the obstacle course was a sheet of plywood with a 2x4 underneath it in the center, so that when the kids walked across it the sides would go up and down. We also had a water balloon war. We had 400 water balloons and it wasn't enough. You can never get enough water balloons. Also, one tip for the water balloons. They are very time consuming to fill up, so you might want to start them a day or two before the party. For the food I just had chips, dip and cake. I had a cake made that was two layers. The bottom layer was big with a smaller layer on top. The lady used army colors for the icing and I took her some of my son's army men, tanks, and the walls that the army men are supposed to stand behind. She arranged them on the cake so it kind of looked like a battle scene. It was very cool and all the kids loved it. Also, we went to one of those stores where everything is 99 cents and we found canteen shaped kool-aid drinks 3 for a dollar. We got some of those tin pans like rolls come in for the kids to eat off of. They were a real hit. For the loot bags I got a big bag of those paper lunch bags from a dollar store and put a few prizes and candy in them. You can find lots of items for an army themed party at Oriental Trading. We got compasses, camo jets, parachute men, camo hats, and dog tags. My husband put the kids names on the dog tags for them. We also used a tent from the national guard so we would have a place to have the refreshments and where the parents could sit and not be so hot. It worked out great because we had a little rain and it kept the parents dry while the kids enjoyed getting wet on the obstacle course. Also, my husband is in the National Guard so he dressed in his fatigues so we had a real army guy there. All of the kids had a great time, even the girls were dressed in camo. Their favorite part was swinging on the rope and falling in the pool of water below. All the parents kept telling me it was one of the best parties they had ever been to. Best of all was how much my son enjoyed it!
