Big Red Barn Party (2 years old)
Invitations: Made of heavy red paper from Michael's, cut in the shape of a barn with double doors that opened to reveal the party info. on the inside. I made the white trim with white paint, and roofs of textured brown paper (also Michael's --they sell it by the sheet) and added animal stickers. Goodie Boxes: Silos! I collected (and asked family and friends to save) the short-sized Pringles containers. (I tried cutting down the taller ones, too, but this did not work as well.) For each box, I covered it with red paper (the same as the invitations), hot-glued a cone shape of the textured brown paper to the lid for the roof, and decorated it with white paint stripes and animal stickers. I also used a white gel pen to write "Farmer (Name)" on each child's box. The boxes were filled with gummi worms, gummi frogs, animal stickers, little plastic animals, and animal crackers. I also had those jointed plastic animals that stand on a little box and you press the bottom of the box to make the animal wiggle, but they were too big to fit in the Pringle's cans so I just handed them out at the party, as game prizes. Games: For the craft project, the children could color flat wooden animal cut-outs (Michael's) with markers. I attached pieces of sticky-back magnetic tape to the back so each child had their own animal magnet to take home. For other games, the children played "Pin the Tail on the Horsie" (I let my daughter pick which animal and she said horse), beabag animal toss (tossing Beanie Baby farm animals into a big basket), and story time ("Big Red Barn" by Margaret Wise Brown --I was able to get this as a "big book" from the library so they could all see it). Decorations: Just red and white balloons and crepe paper streamers, plus the horse poster for "pin the tail." Food: Sandwiches cut out with animal-shaped cookie cutters on bed of shoestring potato "hay," (the "shoestring" or "matchstick" potatoes are available in the potato-chip aisle) finger jello cutouts (the recipe is on the box) cut in animal shapes, baby carrots, halved grapes, chocolate milk, animal-face cupcakes and ice cream. Animal-Face Cupcakes: Make a big batch of cupcakes. Set aside three cupcakes, and then divide the rest into three groups to make Sheep, Cows, and Pigs. For the sheep, frost with white frosting and sprinkle on coconut. Stick on two white jellybeans for the ears, two chocolate chips for the eyes, and one pink jellybean for the nose. For the cows, frost with white frosting. Stick on two white (or brown-and-white spotted) jellybeans for ears, two chocolate chips for eyes, one pink jellybean for the nose, and a few Junior Mints for spots. For the pigs, frost with pink frosting. Cut a pink Starburst candy in half diagonally to make two triangles and stick these triangles on to make the pig's ears. Use chocolate chips for the eyes and a pink Dots candy for the snout. For the three set-aside cupcakes, frost with either white or pink and use the other color to pipe the words "Happy" "Birthday" "(Name)" one word on each cupcake. Put the candles on the writing cupcakes. Put the writing cupcakes in the middle of a big round tray and put the cows, sheep, and pigs all around.
