Batman Party 5yr - Pin Monocle on Peguin

January 2009

Bethany in Ann Arbor, MI USA

The party was from 5-7pm in early September. Including my son there were 6 kids. INVITATIONS: Batman needs your help! (with an Uncle Sam-like picture of Batman pointing at the reader.) When all the kids arrived I told them that Batman had been kidnapped. Then I had them brainstorm to figure out who could have done it. Next I asked them What does every superhero need?" A mask. ACTIVITY: I gave them plain black masks glitter glue and lots of things to put on the masks (feathers self-stick rhinestones etc...). When they were done I asked them "What else do superheros need to fight crime?" Food. I fed them pizza. Next I told them that we'd captured the Penguin and if we helped him find his monocle (I had to explain what a monocle is) then he'd help us out. GAMES: We played pin-the-monocle-on-the-Penguin. I drew a picture of the Penguin on a large sheet of paper and gave each of the kids their own paper monocle that I colored lightly with a colored pencil so we'd know whose was whose. I covered their eyes with a sleep mask and turned them the usual three times. When everyone had had a turn I said that the Penguin told me to ask the Catwoman about the kidnapping and that she was outside. We went outside where I had a drawing of Catwoman on a large sheet of paper. In the drawing she's flexing her claws on one hand and I put real nails poking out of the paper. The kids threw water balloons at the Cat and when they hit her nails the balloons popped. When all the balloons were gone I told the kids that Catwoman said Batman is in the kitchen. CAKE: We went back inside and I took out the cake with a plastic toy batman standing on top of the Batman insignia (drawn with chocolate frosting). We sang Happy Birthday and ate cake and ice cream. Then I told them that Batman said the answer to who kidnapped him was in his batcave which was near the Penguin. I had covered a box with a black garbage bag and left one opening. I had stowed it on the floor in the corner of the room where no one had noticed it earlier. The kids found it quickly. Inside were books for each of the kids. FAVORS: I used "The Everything Kids' Knock Knock Book" which is a joke book. I asked the kids if they knew who had kidnapped Batman and they said "The Joker!" "
