Beach Party 4yr - Sand Pail Loot Bag

Honorable Mention

August 2001

Shannon in Ottawa, Ont.Canada

My son's birthday is in August (this year he turned 5) and so timing is great for an outdoor/wet party. This year we'll have a "Caillou at the Beach" party because that's what he wanted. I agreed right away because hey, it doesn't cost any money to go to the beach. The invitations were Caillou, and sent out attached to a pair of swimming goggles, and asking the guests to wear/bring a swimsuit and to bring a towel. The tablecloth, plastic plates and such are Caillou. The balloons are as well. My father is bringing his BBQ to make hamburgers and hotdogs. All the toppings will be prepared ahead of time. There will also be Greek pasta salad, watermelon, strawberries, and cantaloupe, all served in (new) plastic pails. For drinks we'll have fruit punch and lemonade. A typical summer picnic menu. I had the cake made at the grocery store, with an iced picture of Caillou at the beach on the top. Two of the older guests(aged 10 and 12) have been assigned to face painting, things like seashells, beachballs, sailboats, fish, etc. The guests have been broken up into groups, each with two adults and two children. The parents were asked to stay since the children are fairly young (3to6 mostly) and we will be beside water. Our first activity is sandcastle building in our teams. Later we will play beachball volleyball, and waterballoon baseball. We are bringing a Frisbee and extra waterballoons for those interested. The part my son is most looking forward to is the limbo contest (he's been practicing) during which we will play the limbo song by chubby checker. After each child is deemed out, they will receive a lei, the child lasting the longest receiving two. Throughout the rest of the party we will play the beach boys. At the end of the party we are having a treasure hunt, where the children will have to hunt for their loot bags, hidden in a treasure box.(cardboard box I let my son paint to look real) The Caillou loot bags are inside small plastic sand pails and in them are shovels, sunglasses, "lifeguard" whistle, tiny beachballs(marbles), assorted sea creatures candy and some goldfish crackers. On the pails I've written "Thank you for coming to my Party" and let my son sign his name. Each child's name is written on the handle of the pail. As an added bonus guests can stay as long as they want and continue swimming since we'll be at a public beach. And, I like this part, minimal cleaning afterward! Hope you try it.
