Bob The Builder Party 3yr

August 2009

For my son's 3rd birthday, he wanted a Bob the Builder party.  We had a small backyard party at my in-laws.  They have a sandbox, so I added extra trucks and diggers and half the entertainment and decorating was done.  For the decorations, I printed pictures of Bob and his crew and added them to streamers and balloons in yellow and blue. I decorated the tables with blue and yellow table cloths and for centerpieces I attached blue and yellow balloons to construction cones. At each of the kids seats, I put a tool apron from Oriental Trading with their name written on it. I put their napkins and cutlery in the pockets.  For food we had a Build Your Own Sandwich buffet, with mini sandwich rolls and all of the fixins cut in the shape of stars, squares, circles and rectangles using cookie cutters.  This was easy to do several days in advance and the kids loved making their own sandwiches and adding what they wanted. We also had Spud's Potato Salad, Dizzy's Mixed-Up Pasta Salad, and Muck's Messy Fruit Salad. I served the salads in clean buckets labeled with the fun Bob-themed names, and the sandwich rolls in a clean dump truck.  I put all of the soft drinks in 10-gallon buckets of ice.  I made a three tier cake using a blue square for the base, a red circle for the middle, and a yellow star for the top. I tried to find Bob the Builder themed cast vehicles to put on the cake, but none of the stores in our area carry them anymore. Instead I printed a picture off of the internet of Bob and Scoop and the Bob the Builder logo and added toothpicks so they would sit on the cake.  I also added a couple of construction cones that I scavenged from my son's toy box. It turned out really cute.   For the activity we made birdhouses from birdhouse kits I found at Michaels for a dollar each. They included the glue, paint, and pre-sanded wood pieces. All of the kids enjoyed this project but younger kids needed assistance.    While we waited for the birdhouses to dry, I announced it was time to clean up the job site and we had a water fight with Dollar-Store water blasters, using the 10-gallon buckets as the water supply. Water fights are my sons favorite activity, so I had to incorporate it into his party somehow.  The water fight was a surprise for the kids, in case it wasn't warm enough, but I had warned the parents ahead of time that weather permitting we would be having water activities so they could bring dry clothes for the kids.   The kids got to take home their birdhouses, aprons, and water blasters as gifts.   The party was a huge success!
