Bob the Builder for 3 Year Old Boy:
My son turns 3 at the end of February, and New Jersey is definitely inside weather, so I turned to birthdaypartyideas.com for lots of great tips. The house was decorated all over (inside and outside) with "Caution" construction tape and loads of balloons, all tied down to inexpensive orange safety cones (I found them in Wal-Mart's bike section). We also made banners on the computer featuring lots of construction equipment and hung them in the kitchen, family room and over the front door. Each child was given a Bob yellow construction hat and canvas tool apron when they arrived. Their names were on the hats (paint pen) and aprons (Tulip brand puffy paint - start early, it takes about 4 days from start to finish!), and they were given lots of Bob stickers to decorate their own hats. Each child had their lunch served in MegaBlocks dump trucks - we got free french fry bags from Burger King and put little packs of hot dogs, french fries, carrots, cheese, chicken nuggets (with ketchup in aluminum foil cupcake holders) in the back of each truck, so every child had at least something they could eat. Plus, their lunches were mobile, so they drove them all over the family room (you have to be willing to give up on your rugs!). Their "job" was to paint wooden dump trucks which we bought as craft kits (Rag Shop) and assembled ahead of time - we just spread a big bright blue tarp on the kitchen floor and gave each of them a brush with lots of paint trays on the floor - they loved it and did not want to stop. I think they thought the task was to fill up the back of the trucks with paint! We moved on to a pull-string Bob pinata which we packed with Bob loot bags so each child got the same stuff, and finally ended up with a Muck dump truck cake (our local bakery copied it from a toy Muck, but you can use the Wilton 3D train mold and make it yourself - instructions are in their 2000 yearbook). They ate the cake with shovels from the dollar store, and really enjoyed that. We also had the Bob music CD playing throughout the 2 hour party and that gave lots of atmosphere. At the end, each child took home their lunch dump truck, pinata bag, cake shovels, apron, hat and painted truck (if dry!), and a favor box that carried Bob stickers, magic pads, spinning tops, mini M&M's tubes, and each one had a toy - we bought those 10-piece tool kits from Wal-Mart for $10 and just put one tool in each favor box (boxes from birthdayexpress.com). We had loads of food for all the adults, and decorated the buffet area with more construction cones, extra hats, and of course, plenty of caution tape & streamers. Also had full size plastic construction hats for the parents to wear (funny how few people remembered to put them on!). Last but not least, we hired a photographer to capture all the fun, because at last year's 2-year old party my husband and I were so busy we ended up with virtually no pictures - this year we didn't have to worry about that. It was great fun and all the kids really enjoyed themselves.
