For my son's 3rd birthday he wanted a Bob the Builder themed birthday.
I figured this would be perfect as there is a lot of new home construction happening in our neighborhood - almost literally in our backyard! I shopped and shopped for Bob the Builder party supplies and soon realized that the "merchandising" for this fairly new (to the U.S.A.) show was not yet available. I could buy all the partyware from England but, with shipping, it was just going to cost TOO much. I created invitations on the computer, grabbing pictures of Bob and the Crew from the Nick Jr. website. The yard and house were decorated with bright orange cones, flashing construction horses and yellow caution tape. All of the tablewware was also orange, black and yellow; I sprinkled tool shaped confetti on the tables as well. I used large empty paint cans for chips, and small ones for condiments. To create a veggie tray, I laid out vegetables on an unused paint tray - using the well in the tray for the veggie dip. To accompany this we just grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Instead of a cake, I crumpled brownies in the back of an unused dump truck. I also threw on some green shaved coconut (to look like grass in the "dirt"). I found candles shaped like tools. I scooped out brownies for everyone with a shovel and topped with vanilla ice cream - BROWNIES A LA MODE! To entertain the tykes, I had each of them create a Bob the Builder out of a toilet paper roll core and paper pieces that I had pre-cut for them. I printed out a poster size Bob the Builder from the internet and also printed out pictures of hammers. Each child played "Pin the Hammer in Bob's hand". We also dug out all of my son's trucks and pails and shovels for sandbox play, and had an area of our huge patio designated for chalk play. I took each child's picture, hammer in hand, standing in front of the house being built behind us. Each Polaroid was then attached to a card that exclaimed, "Can we fix it! Yes we can!" and given to the child when they went home. Finally, each child went home with a personalized nail apron filled with a homemade Bob the Builder coloring book, a paint stick, a hammer cookie cutter, candy "paint and brush", a set of chalk shaped like various tools (hammer, screwdriver, wrench, saw) and a Bob the Builder chocolate bar (my only "cheat" - I purchased them from England and had them shipped here).
