For my daughter's 5th birthday, we had a Fancy Nancy birthday based on her favorite book of the same name by Jane O'Connor. I began with the invitation that I made by printing a picture of Nancy with the following message: Get fancy and join me (address) respondez s'il vous plait (that's French for R.S.V.P.) at (phone number). I mounted that on pink card stock and tied a big bow with a colorful ribbon at the top. Since there aren't any themed paper goods and I wanted to avoid the tea party or dress-up themes I searched everywhere for the perfect paper goods. And I finally found the perfect thing at one of the craft stores. The plates cups etc. had a big colorful two-tiered birthday cake with colorful streamers around it. It set the perfect fancy tone for the birthday. I made my daughter's cake similar to the one on the paper goods. I made one tier lime green (my daughter's favorite color) with fushia ribbon around the bottom and the other tier fushia (Nancy's favorite color) with green ribbon at the bottom. I sprinkled the whole thing with large confetti sprinkles and topped it off with a tiara and tall glittery candles. We overly decorated (in Nancy's style) the house with fuschia green and yellow streamers and balloons and added several rows of white Christmas light accents around the house. As the guest of honor my daugter was also ornate in a fancy dress with big curls and a bigger bow in her hair. As the guests arrived they each got to choose a tiara to wear and also chose a shopping bag in their choice of color. I had printed Fancy Nancy coloring pages from the Harper Collins website and each child colored their own picture and glued it to their shoppping bag for identification purposes. We set aside the bags for later and started working on a craft to make each child's room fancy. I had bought square canvas panels and covered them with different patterns of scrapbooking paper. I also supplied a bag of buttons wooden letters and wooden cutouts of shoes handbags flowers etc. Each child chose whatever embellishments they liked and mod podged it onto the canvas of their choice. The kids really loved this craft and were very proud to have made a real decorative item for their room. I simply made smocks out of trash bags and with a little help from the parents the craft went off very smoothly. We set the canvases aside to dry and moved on to cake and treats. Along with the fancy cake we also had a fancy punch (sprite sorbet fruit mixture) and ice cream with all of the extras (nuts whipped cream cherries and of course Nancy's favorite - sprinkles). I also made and decorated sugar cookies in the shape of a dress handbag shoes sunglasses etc. As they ate their goodies I read them the story of Fancy Nancy. After storytime my daughter opened her presents and as the guests prepared to leave we had just one last thing for them to do.  Instead of traditional goodie bags I had purchased some fancy items from our local dollar store. There were feather boas tiaras with jewels feather fans and pens with plumes. I had used all of these to decorate our living room which served as our Fancy Nancy shopping area. At the end of the party each guest retrieved the shopping bag they had decorated at the beginning of the party and went "shopping" in the store. They each got to pick one of each item and that served as their goody bag. All the girls loved being fancy and my daughter especially was thrilled to see Fancy Nancy's vision come to life. It took a lot of planning but I think the end result was a wonderful party even Nancy would be proud of!"
