When my son was almost 2 he loved the book Go Dogs Go" by P.D. Eastman.
When it came time for his birthday I found it fitting to use that theme. Invitations: Dog Tag shapes cut by mom hand painted by child. Come Party with the Dogs! Why when where and RSVP. Children were asked to bring a favorite music instrument with them. The party was held in a barn that had been converted into a space for concerts weddings and such. When parent and child arrived we sent them to create their "DOG". We set up two long tables with assorted crafting essentials in the middle. We provided a dog mask and ears template or allowed them to create their own. We also provided a basket full of silk scarves wings and capes for the finishing touch. When their "DOG" was created and named each child was given a dog collar made from colored ribbon with a small bell attached. When the children were finished they just ran around in the gym while others worked on creating their "DOG". When all the children were finished we read the book. We used the shortened version because energy was high and we wanted to keep their attention. To begin we had the children crawl through a tunnel to the "DOG PARTY"! Parents gave their children the music instruments and they formed a line. Birthday child leads the group. We marched and danced around the gym in our "DOG" Parade. Which lead to the back room where we had cupcakes and ice cream ready to go. We had the kids eat on the floor because they were now "DOGS". After cake we opened presents. We sent home "DOGGY" bags filled with dog stickers little music shakers bubbles and for a treat we used organic apples. The children had a blast. We kept it simple and sweet. Being creative with a book was the fun part. Every time we read "Go Dogs Go" I think of this Party. It is still a favorite now...the longer version of course! "
