Peter Rabbit Party 4yr

April 2010

Donna in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, USA

My four year old son's favorite bedtime story is a pop-up book titled Peter Rabbit's Lucky Escape. We created a birthday theme around the characters and events in the story.  For invitations we cut carrot shapes out of orange paper and attached green curling ribbon to the top for the stems. We started the party with a reading from the book and the kids got to paw (pun intended!) through all of the pop-up fun.  Each child got a map to lead them through all the places Peter Rabbit traveled in the story.  Our first stop was the dark forest which was just tons of black and dark green streamers hung from our ceiling. Once out of the forest, we headed to Jeremy Fisher's pond and everybody got a chance to 'fish.'  We had cut out brightly colored fishies, taped paperclips to the backs and then attached a magnet to a string on our fishing pole. This was a big hit! Then we stopped at Tom Kittens house where we played pin the tail on Peter Rabbit.  (We ran out of time because fishing was so popular but we almost stopped at Jemima Puddle Ducks to play play Peter, Peter, Rabbit. Think Duck, Duck, Goose but, since ducks are highly offended by Duck, Duck, Goose we were gonna change it up a bit!!!) Then we arrived at Farmer McGreggors. We built a 'farm house' out of a large cardboard box.  We painted it, decorated it with flowers and cut out a door. Each 'rabbit' took turns creeping up to Farmer McGreggors door, knocking and dashing away while another child (Farmer McGreggor) would race out the door and try to catch Peter Rabbit before he/she got through the finish line (streamers we had pulled across the finish line!)  The kids dug this!  We ended up at Miss TiggyWinkles 'cause she made us cupcakes. After presents, all the kids got sent home with peat-pots (garden center)that we filled with gummy worms, a toy shovel and trowel ($store!), a packet of seeds (sunflowers for the girls, carrots for the boys), a pinwheel and candy treats.  This earned a 'This was a great party, Mommy!' from my son and I think our family will always have great memories from this birthday party!
