My daughter Emma loves to read- she's six and when I turned my back on her at the library I found her at the counter, asking for her own library card! I decided to theme her birthday
party 'A Very Bookwormy Birthday'. We gave out homemade invitations with a worm in glasses on the front to eleven of her friends. They were asked to dress as their fave character from a
book. (Even I dressed up!) They arrived at ten o'clock and coloured pics of themselves. Then when everyone had arrived, we started playing games.
Our first game was Guess. The kids had to guess who everyone else was. Another was 'Step on a book'. The kids were divided into teams of four. Each team was given two cardboard books and there was a big bookworm at the end of the room. Each child had to go and cross the room to get to te bookworm but only stepping on her two books. When returning, she had to pick up her books and hand them to the next person. The first team back won a small prize. (Later I cut the head out of the bookworm and each girl put her face in the hole and I took photos) Another game was Book Charades. They picked the name of a book out of a hat and acted it out. This was a hit. Another was Think. The child picked out an alphabet letter out of a hat and had to think of a book that started with that letter eg. H for Harry Potter. The last game was a Scavenger Hunt. They were led all around the house with different clues until they finally came to the last one- different storybooks for each girl hidden in the washing machine. They were very cheap at the shops, just Golden Books or something. After that we sat down on comfy cushions, read their books and relaxed. Then we had lunch- Ants on a Log (celery, peanut butter and raisins) hot dogs, sausage rolls and of course lollies. My main lollies were SNAKES ALIVE (AKA. bookworms). After lunch we had crafts. They made their own bookworm (decorated styrafoam balls with a head and a pointy tail, strung together after they dried) and decorated their own hollow book for hiding their treasures (just a plain hinged box witha book name written on the 'spine'). Their last activity was cutting the cake (A book!) and watching a half hour episode of Arthur (he likes books). Until the parents arrived, they played with Emma's toys and left very happy. Their goody bags were their hollow books filled with lollies, chocolates, lipglosses, necklaces, their photos, their books and boookworms, a slice of cake and some other little things. I suggest you throw this party, esp. if your daughter loves books.
