Backyard Bug Party 3yr

Special Mention

March 2001

Kellie and Valeri in Dallas, TX

We had a Backyard Bug Party (in the winter!)for our daughters who were turning three. (They are cousins and are 2 weeks apart in age.) We sent out ladybug shaped invitations with wings that opened and closed (they were held on by brads) that said "Buzzz on over for a Bug-erific Bee-day Party for Morgan and Nora" We taped 2 1/2" high green paper on the walls of the living room.  WE cut the top of the paper to make it look like grass. We made big "friendly" looking bugs (ladybugs, caterpillars, bees, butterflies, dragonflies, snails, spiders, ants, etc.)out of colorful paper and taped them in the grass in all kinds of fun poses. WE also made flowers for the grass. The table was covered with a picnic checkered table cloth that we had hot glued bugs on and we placed a picnic basket on the table as well that we filled with the party favors.  Our party favors were Mason jars that we had made into Bug catching jars by placing tool over the mouth of the jar and then holding it down with the metal rings.  We used paint pens and wrote "(Child's Name)'s Critters" on the jars and then filled the jars with bug shaped candy, bug stickers, plastic bugs and bug barrettes for the girls. Over the table, we made a rainbow and cloud in the chandelier by placing poly-fill in the chandelier and hanging rainbow colored crepe paper from the "arms"of the chandelier.  We used picnic checkered paper goods and even found some ant stickers that we placed strategically on the plates so that it looked as though there were ants on them!  We made a lady-bug cake (the cake was baked in one large bowl, for the body and one small bowl, for the head and then iced to look like a ladybug)and a caterpillar cake (baked in graduated sizes of bowls, the largest bowl being the head and the smallest bowl being the tip of the body, and again decorated with green icing, smiling face, etc.) We also served "dirt" (crumble chocolate cookies in the bottom of small dixie cups, place 1 or 2 gummy worms on top of cookies, top with chocolate pudding and one more worm.)instead of ice cream. We made bug shaped food (pinwheel sandwiches with carrots as legs and olives for eyes, 'ants on a log'- peanut butter stuffed celery with raisins placed on top, etc.) We played musical bugs (like musical chairs, but instead of chairs, we put bug cut-outs on the floor and would remove one everytime the music stopped). We even found a song called "Ain't no Bugs On Me" that we played.  We had bug books out and bug board games (e.g.. Cooties) available for the kids to read and play with.  For the art we had cut out different bug wings (butterflies, bees, dragonflies, beetle) from card-board and had glue, felt, pom poms, stickers ,etc. for the kids to decorate a pair of wings. Then we attached them to their backs (back-pack style) with pre-cut elastic and staples. We also provided dealy-boppers for each child to wear on their heads for antennae. We also made bugs out of Styrofoam balls that had been pre-cut in half and painted different colors and large pom-poms that we had pre- glued eyes, noses, and mouths on.  The kids glued the heads to the Styrofoam bodies and stuck pipe cleaners in the balls behind the heads for antennae.  The kids had a fabulous time and it is a party that everyone is still talking about today. Our girls were born in January so it is almost impossible to do all of those fun outdoor parties. This was a way of bring the fun of the outdoors inside!
