A BUG'S LIFE PARTY - 3 yr. old
For my son's 3rd birthday, I took the inspiration for his party from his favorite movie at the time, A Bug's Life. Since the movie is so old, it was difficult to find related party ware. For invitations I used plain white cards from Oriental Trading. I found some websites that had A Bug's Life coloring pages. I found a cute picture of Flick all packed and heading off on his adventure. I colored and cut a Flick picture to go on the front of each invitation. I put Flick with the phrase "Follow Me to Gabriel's 3rd Birthday Party" on the front. For decorations I used dark blue, light blue, lime green and purple since those were the colors of his cake. The tablecloths, napkins, cups, and balloons were a mixture of those colors. It came together nicely. The coloring sheet website had different scenes from the movie and different characters from the movie. I colored some and put them on popsicle sticks. I then put them in colored bits of play-doh so they would stand up. They created cute little "tablescapes" on the various tables. The activities were all related to the story. As the children arrived I let them pick from an assortment of different "puppets" I made for them to color and decorate. The puppets were simply more characters from the website coloring pages cut out and glued to popsicle sticks. After they colored their puppets we gathered inside and we read the Bug's Life story to them from a Disney Treasury book we have. They kids pretended to act out the story with their puppets. We then went outside and the children became ants. I got some headbands with antennae type things coming off of them from Oriental Trading. The only ones I could find that would work actually had smiley face boggle antennae things. I simply covered them with aluminum foil and "voila!" ant antennae. Each child had some antennae. They looked so cute walking around with them on! When they became ants we all went on a "Bug hunt" like Flick did. I got little plastic bugs from Oriental Trading and we hid them around the yard. I gave each child a ziploc bag with their name on it to collect their bugs in. After the activity their bug bag went into their goody bag. After the bug hunt, we played follow the leader (since ants always travel in a line!) doing silly things. We then designated my husband to be the ants' nemesis, the evil Hopper the Grasshopper and all the kids chased him around the yard in a friendly game of "get Hopper." The kids then got rides in a yard utility wagon pulled by the riding lawn mower (not so much related to the movie but a huge kid pleaser!). We then went inside for cake and gifts. I found a Wilton cake pan on Ebay of Flick. The cake was so easy and so cute, a real centerpiece! As a settling tactic, we had the movie playing in the background for any kids who were interested. The goody bags for the kids were white lunch sized bags with colored pictures of Flick on them. Inside were their little bags of collected bugs, smaller coloring pages I made from the websites, the puppets they made, and their bug antennae. A great time was had by all!
