For my daughter's first birthday we turned our house into a butterfly garden. She was in love with butterflies and flowers.
Since her birthday is the end of October we turned the indoors into her garden party. The archway between the dining room and living room was the centerpiece. I used green tulle and artifical flowers to turn it into a flowered archway - the entire 8 foot span was loaded with flowers and then we put butterflies, ladybugs and bees "flying" around it with fishing line. Our bay window was decorated with more flowers and 2 strands of white christmas lights. The chandelier in the dining room was also decorated with silk flowers and bees, lady bugs and butterflies hung down from it with fishing line (these were hand crafted decorations that were also a present and are now in her room, which is also a flower garden). There were 8 small, round vases on the table by the cake filled with fresh flowers, as well as scattered throughout the house. We also had flower, butterfly, ladybug and bees shaped balloons all through the house. I made a rectangular cake and frosted it with icing tinted green. I made a garden path across the cake with green edible glitter. Then I used royal icing flowers my mother-in-law and I made (you can also buy ready made flowers online) and covered the entire top surface with flowers to make it look like a flower garden. Then we made chocolate lollipops shaped like bees, ladybugs and butterflies and stuck them into the cake so they were flying over the garden. The sides of the cake were made to look like a picket fence. I rolled out sugar cookie dough and cut it to look like individual pickets. After they were baked and cooled I covered put them side by side around the entire cake on the sides. The rest of the food for the party was finger sandwiches, a fruit platter, veggie platter and various salads. We also served lemonade, juices, soft drinks and tea. With the guests being so young we had no party games, but the children loved playing under the flowered archway and with the balloons. The goody bags were entirely from Oriental Trading Co. We used flowered handled bags and filled them with the bug finger puppets, plastic butterflies, foam butterfly face masks, bubbles, flower and bug stickers, and butterfly necklaces.
