We had such a fun time at my 5 year old daughter's butterfly birthday bash, that I wanted to share! As each guest arrived they picked out a pair of antennas. We made these by
twisting pipe cleaners on head bands and gluing pom poms at the end. I also curled the pipe cleaners around my finger to give them a springy look. The kids looked really cute. We
got some great pictures. After they got their head bands they came to sit on the "Story Blanket" and we read butterfly stories until everyone got there.
We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, and "Gotta Go I then explained that we would go out to the garden to play some butterfly games. As they played the games they would earn "Butterfly Bucks", then we would go to "Butterfly Town" to spend their money. The first game was like musical chairs. I printed some flowers on bright colored cardstock, cut them out, and taped them to wooden skewers. I stuck them into the ground in a circle. When the music was playing they had to fly like butterflies from flower to flower, and when the music stopped they had to find a flower and stop. The next game was a butterfly hunt. I bought a package of small water balloons, and stuffed them with either a butterfly or caterpillar (stamped on paper) Then I blew up the balloons and put them in a tub. The kids had to pop the "cocoons" to see if their butterfly was done, or if it was still a caterpillar. Next, we did a cocoon race. I used pillow cases for the cocoons, they had to climb in and jump to the finish line. Finally, we did a bean bag toss. I painted some flowers on a foam board, and cut out the centers. They had to throw the butterfly bean bags through the flowers. Now it was time to go to butterfly town. I set it up in our living room, and recruited my sisters, and sister-in-law, to help. The first stop was the butterfly bank. I gave them each some butterfly bucks(printed on the computer), and a shopping bag to take with them. Then they had half an hour to shop. There was a butterfly beauty parlor where they could get butterfly barrettes in their hair, tattoos, or their nails polished with butterfly decals. There was a butterfly bakery where they could decorate a butterfly sugar cookie, or buy a butterfly sucker. And, there was the butterfly boutique with an assortment of butterfly things like; pencils, erasers, gliders, puzzles, bracelets, etc. After shopping, the Caterpillar Cafe opened for lunch. The special of the day was: Butterfly pasta with cheese sauce, caterpillar salad, butterfly wings, flower nectar, and cupcakes. For the caterpillar salad, I lined up green grapes on a toothpick, and stuck in some little rice noodles for antennas- they looked like little caterpillars. The butterfly wings were chocolate covered pretzels. For the flower nectar, I made my own labels and covered juice boxes. The butterfly cup cakes were frosted then I stuck on candy fruit slices for wings, and a gummy worm in the middle for the body. For favors they got their antenna's, and all the things that they bought in butterfly town. I don't know who had more fun with this party, me while planning everything, or the kids who got to come!
