We just had wonderful camping party with some help from other contributors to this website...thank you!  We made some really cute invitations on the computer with a camping scene on the front and lots of different bugs crawling around on the inside.  We put up a tent in the backyard and put some stuffed bears and other forest creatures in and around it along with my son's "camping gear" including a canteen, lantern and mess kit.  In front of the tent we put up a "Please Do Not Feed the Bears" sign. My son has a giant stuffed snake and we put that up around the swing set along with the remaining stuffed animals.  As the kids arrived we made pet rocks that they selected out of a pile of medium sized rocks we had collected from around the neighborhood. I had a supply of googly eyes, foam hands & feet, chenille pipe cleaners, pom-poms and feathers as well as some washable paint. It was a nice activity for the kids to work on as we waited for everyone to arrive.  After they finished (and everyone had arrived) we had a scavenger hunt.  We had five teams looking for six different items hidden around the yard representing things my son was interested in (which is why we had six of them to hide!) for example we had them find a spiderman, a teddy bear, a tiger, a real live bug and more! We had the parents who stayed help out with the list since most of the guest weren't quite able to read yet. The parents said they had as much fun looking as the kids. Once they finished the kids were rewarded with cups of worms in dirt (gummy worms in crushed oreos). The kids really got a kick out of that.  We served bug juice (green Kool-Aid) with bugs in the container as well as a bug in each cup...we warned the kids to make sure they wouldn't swallow it!  They all thought that was pretty cool.  After that we swung at a pinata that my son and I made (he wanted a tent pinata, we looked everywhere - couldn't find one so we made it by covering balloon with newspaper strips soaked in diluted white glue and covered it with cardboard in the shape of a tent.)  We cut one side so it looked like the flap of a tent and put one of his plastic bears in it - it came out cute!   After the pinata fun we did cake and presents. For the cake I ordered a sheet cake from Costco and asked them NOT to decorate it. My son and I decorated it together by first crushing oreos and spreading them across the top to look like dirt, then used green food coloring with coconut to make "grass" and spread that on top of the crushed oreos.  We made a camp fire with a tea candle sunken into the cake and surrounded it with pretzels and tootsie rolls for logs. Around the fire, we placed little "campers" in sleeping bags made out of graham crackers covered in frosting and fruit rollups.  We frosted Vanilla Wafer cookies and decorated them with faces for their heads and used brown colored coconut for hair. Then we made a tent out of graham crackers frosted in green. Finally, we had little trees made out of melted marshmallows tinted green and corn flakes (think rice krispie treats). We decorated the sides and edges of the cake with little plastic bugs and butterflies that my son had. It was really cute!  Our goodie bags were hobo sacks - we collected a bunch of sticks from the yard and then ordered our supplies from Oriental Trading Company.  We got the tie die bandanas and made little sacks with them and filled them with flashlights, candy rings, gummy bugs, dream catcher keychains, collapsable cups, glow in the dark bugs and geodes.  Big hit with the kids.  It was a fun party for all!
