For my son's 8th birthday we had a "Camp Out" party.
My son invited his boy scout troop (about 8 boys total). We went all out. The invitations were printed from the computer onto standard size specialty stationary. The name of the design on the stationary was "Adirondak Trails" we also had matching envelopes.(ordered from Lang Paper Company on-line) The invitation was a rhyme involving campfire stories, smores, etc. The invitation also requested that the invitees bring their sleeping bags, a pillow, and a chair. For the info we used "Campsite" instead of address, for the time of the party we used "Camp Hours" and ofcourse my husband and I were the Camp Directors. We set up three tents in our back yard. My husband also set up around the perimeter of the "campsite" some citronella filled tiki torches to keep the bugs abay. We purchased two small very inexpensive disposable table-top hibatchi type grills.(from Walgreens) We set them up on some cinder blocks (as not to burn our lawn) near the tents. My husband then set up all the boys chairs around the grills. While he was doing that, I was getting them ready for their scavenger hunt. I split them into 2 groups of 4 and gave them each a list. They had 1/2 hour to obtain as many of the items on the list as possible. This gave us time to set up their sleeping bags in the tents for them. We purchased 8 small inexpensive plastic lanterns from Target. They used them while on their scavenger hunt and they were also part of their take home goodies. We had three legged races and played Pin the Flames on the Campfire. I took craft paper and drew logs on it. Across the top I wrote Camp .....(our last name) needs your help lighting our fire. I used red, orange & yellow "foam paper" and cut out various flame shapes. I wrote each boys name on one and we blind folded them with a bandana whoever got their "flame name" closest the the top of the logs won. After the games, we grilled hot dogs and hamburgers on the little hibatchis and they had chips, etc. We also had a big cooler out in the "campsite" filled with drinks for them. After dinner they cooled down by watching Ernest Goes To Camp. When the movie was finished we had cake (well cupcakes) I made chocolate cupcakes and frosted them green..on top of the cupcakes were working miniature coleman laterns(keychains) that I found at our local sporting good store for about $2.00 a piece. The kids loved them. For their "goodie bags" I made them each "hobo sticks" I purchased all of the items from oriental trading company. I took a red bandana and laid it fully open..I then placed on it: a a small plastic canteen, a miniature personal fan (it's hot in FL in Sept.) two flashlight necklaces (which they used to play flashlight tag), various bug tatoos, these things called geodes (small rocks that you smash and there are crystals inside) and gum. I then tied the opposite corners of the bandana to each other and then tied it to a small dowel rod (purchased from Home Depot and cut in half length wise about 3 feet each) The boys thought that these were the coolest things ever. We wound down the evening by sitting in our chairs around the "campfire" (the hibatchis), we sang campfire songs, made Smores and told ghost stories. The boys stayed up late and enjoyed spending time at their campsite without us "Camp Directors" In the morning we made it easy and just had donoughts and cinnamon rolls, milk and juice. Their parents had to pick them up at 9:30. At the next pack meeting, all the parents commented that their sons had a great time and didn't stop talking about the party the whole next day. Some of the boys even requested similar parties for their next birthdays. This was one of those parties that my son will remember fondly as he gets older. He still mentions it from time to time some 6 months later!!!
