Camping Theme Party- For our daughter's third birthday party we used a camping theme but we had it inside, because of the cold weather, and during the day, because these kids were not
old enough for an overnight party.
In our basement we set up a small dome tent (does not need stakes) and put a mattress under it to make it bouncy and soft. I made a campfire pit with the bottom of a large clay pot and some sticks. Under the sticks I concealed a cup of water with a piece of dry ice to make "smoke". Buy the dry ice the same day as the party if possible because it will evaporate even if you keep it in the freezer. For games I made a frog pond, a fishing lake, and an owl pinata. The frog pond was drawn on the side of a large cardboard box with a hole cut in the center of the blue painted pond. I created frogs out of deflated colored balloons filled with unpopped popcorn and tied shut. I drew pictures of frogs on the balloons and the side of the box with a black marker and paint. The object was simply to stand behind a line and toss the balloon frogs back into their pond. You could offer prizes but kids this age had fun even without the incentives. For the fishing lake I inflated a small wading pool and filled it with styrofoam packing peanuts (no cost if you have collected them from packages that have been mailed to you). I did not find any candies shaped like fish but used lollypops instead and tossed them into the lake so kids could "fish" for candy with their hands. Warnings: The styrofoam will make a mess as inevitably someone will decide to jump in it. Keep the styrofoam away from kids of the "everything in their mouth" age. The Owl pinata was fairly easy to make out a small brown shopping bag filled with candy. I glued on eyes, beak, feet, wings and pointed ears cut out of colored paper. I used glue and a stapler to help give the bag an owl shape and this bag had a carrying handle that made it easy to suspend. We used a plastic wiffle bat and took turns until candy was everywhere.
