For my son's birthday party we had a 2 hour, indoor camp out. (This is a great party for kids of a variety of ages. We had kids at the party  whose ages ranged from 3 to 10, girls and boys, and they all had a blast!) I started by moving most of the chairs out of the dining room (I have a really big dining room. A den or family room would work too.) We used a couple of the chairs to make tents by setting them back to back  and then pulling them about 2 feet apart. Then we draped them with  sheets. My son had a play tent that we set up too. We also draped the dining room table with sheets. We placed 'wild animals' in the tents (stuffed animals). Then I covered the floor with silk fall leaves (You can  buy silk fall leaves in bags but it is cheaper to buy silk bushes and pull  the leaves off. This is one of those mindless things you can do in front  of TV). I also taped glow in the dark stars to the walls. Before the party  we started playing a tape of nature sounds. The guests arrived in their pajamas and were given a flashlight with their name written on it (a  great party favor that I found for $1 with batteries at the local discount  store! Trust me. Kids love flashlights!). We just turned off the lights and  let them play for half an hour with the flashlights. After that we took the kids into another room and had a fishing contest. We bought a couple of those fishing games where the little plastic fish move up and down and you try to catch them with little fishing poles that have magnets on  them. While the kids were waiting their turn to fish they could go to  another table and decorate simple felt pouches with beads, sequins,  feathers, etc. (What is a camp without crafts?!) To make the pouches just cut a long rectangle out of felt and stitch the two sides. The fold is  the bottom and the top is the opening. If you hate to sew, hot glue the  sides. While the kids were in the other room, I went to the camp area (my dining room) and hid plastic bugs all over the place. Each child  was given a little plastic bug cage with their name on it (This became  another party favor. I got these at the everything is a dollar store). They then had a bug hunt, which was a huge hit. After that we put quilts on  the floor and served hot dogs, chips and juice boxes. Next was cake and present time.  After that we just let the kids play in the campground until the parents returned. Three years later my son and his friends are still talking about this party!
