Candyland Birthday Party We had a Candyland party for my 5-year-old daughter and her friends.  For inviatations, we printed postcards from the Hasbro internet site and my daughter decorated them with glitter. The inviatations told the children to come and meet Plumpy, Mrs. Mint, Lord Licorce, Queen Frostine, Grandma Nut,Gloppy, Princess Lolly, and King Candy as we search for Candy Castle. Since my daughter's birthday was in January, we bought candy and decorations at deep discounts after Christmas. Decorations included plastic candy canes in the yard, candy can lights, gum drop garland, and a Christmas wreath covered in candy. When the children arrived, we made Candyland Castles.  I cut a castle shape out of cardboard for each child and used candy ribbon to make a hanger on them.  We covered the cardboard with water-based caulk (washes easily with water and was actually less messy than glue) and the children pressed colorful candies into the caulk to make beautiful candy castles. My daughter had then asked family members to dress as characters from Candyland to play a search for candy castle game.  I made each costume without much expense or time.  I placed colored construction paper squares on the floor to look like a candyland board and each child sat on a square.  I showed the children my candyland board with all of the characters and explained that on this game we were trying to get to candy castle.  Each character came into the room one at a time and the children asked them if they knew where candy castle was. Each character then read a clue introducing the next character. We had Plumpy (purple sweat suit stuffed with balloons and a green wig) pull the string to release plum balloons and confetti (see internet for making a homemade balloon release, very easy).  Then Mrs. Mint (white sweatshirt and foam visor with stripes made from red electrical tape) gave everyone necklaces made from hot glueing mints together.  Lord Licorce (licorce mustache and black cape with licorce trim) got chased off because he didn't want to help the kids find candy castle.  Grandma Nutt (flannel gown, boots, apron and a bonnet with peanuts glued onto it) let kids reach into her box a styrofoam peanuts and pull out a cheap plastic prize. Gloppy (stretchy large plastic garbage bags hot-glued together to make a tunic with long skirt and a hood) gave out bags of homemade slime (lots of recipes on the internet). Princess Lolly (dress covered with lollipops and a tiara with lollipops glued on) gave everyone a ring pop. Queen Frostine (a child-sized doll dress in a blue cape with a tiara) gave everyone Frostine's frost (small bags of cotton candy).  Finally, King Candy (Crown covered in candy, candy medallion necklace and cape trimed in Christmas tinsel) knew where candy castle was. He led the children into another room where Candy castle was set up.  We had brought our children's outdoor plastic play castle inside and used double-sided tape to cover it with candy.  The children filled their treat bags with candy.  We then had cake (white cake, a plastic toy castle with candy glued on with frosting and a starburst candyland trail heading up to the castle with the plastic candyland figures at the start) chips, cheese and juice. We then opened gifts and the children watched part of the Candlyland Movie DVD until their parents arrived.  Although not expensive at all, this party did take some time and the cooperation of family members to put together, but my daughter and her friends thought that it was magical.
