Carnival Party

Honorable Mention

May 2000

Tamara in Frederick, MD, USA

I planned a carnival party for my daughter's sixth birthday, which was supposed to be held outside at our home. However, it rained and we were forced to find a back up plan. We were very lucky and was able at the last minute to reserve our church parish center. We had invited 28 children so our goal was to make it as entertaining as possible.  We rented a moonbounce that was in the shape of a castle, which fit perfect inside the parish center. There was a booth for face painting. We sat up a separate table for the cotton candy and little white bags of popcorn. We blew up a baby pool and filled it with 310 Easter eggs each with a surprise which was either candy, 50 cents or a ticket that corresponded with a small toy. We made treat bags (in matching colors of purple and pink) with their names on it for their cotton candy, popcorn bags and fish pond surprises. Each child was given tickets that could be used throughout the birthday carnival.  My sister-in-law made colorful signs for each of the different booths and a sign that had my daughter's name and 6th birthday on it.  The paper supplies had a picture of a "groovy girl" in the colors of pink and purple.  We rented a helium tank and blew up 60 pink and purple balloons that we put throughout the room. The table cloths were also in pink and purple, as well as some that coordinated with the paper supplies.  Keeping with the groovy theme, her cake was in the shape of a flower with a picture of the groovy girl on it that matched the plates and napkins.  Since most kids don't usually eat the birthday cake, we made ice cream cone cupcakes (we baked the cake right in the ice cream cones) that were decorated to match the cake and displayed around the cake. Each ice cream cone had a little surprise in it (jelly beans).  The kids loved them!!!  We packed up the grill and took it too to the parish center and had hot dogs, hamburgers and rigatonis for everyone to eat.  As a thank you gift for all of the kids, we gave them a bubble wand and a bottle of bubbles to take home with them. Some of the kids treat bags were filled to the top with all of the prizes, popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream cones, and bubble wands. Everyone had a GREAT time (even though the party had to be moved inside).
