Very Hungry Caterpillar party For my son's birthday, we had a chose his favorite book to base his party on. When the children arrived, they made antennae out of headbands (5/$1.00 at Wal
Mart), two pipe cleaners wrapped around and sticking up, and two beads at the top of the pipe cleaners. Then I read Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar story to the children. I
reread it, giving each of them a piece of food from the story cut out of flannel. They placed the food on the flannelboard as it was read. They then searched the garden to find
plastic butterflies. For our crafts, they made two caterpillars. The first consisted of four puff balls glued on to a craft stick (the kind that look like the old dixie cup ice
cream spoons) with two wiggly eyes and small pipe cleaners glued on for antennae. I attached a magnet to the back. I also cut egg cartons into threes, and they decorated them with
paint, once again adding wiggly eyes and pipe cleaner antennae. For lunch, I served macaroni and cheese made with bow tie noodles, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into butterfly
shapes, and mandarin oranges. For his "cake," I used a red velvet cake recipe, substituting green food coloring and made it into cupcakes. I then arranged the cupcakes
so they looked like a caterpillar.
I iced them all with green icing, except the head, which was red. Eyes were m&m's. I also served cookies cut into butterflies and cotton candy for "cocoons". In the gift bags were gummi worms, plastic butterflies and plastic snakes (caterpillars??), bug stickers, and butterfly hair clips (for girls) Boys also received bouncy balls. This party was attended by kids ages 2-5, and they all had a blast!
