I have to admit, I always build the theme of my parties around the goody bag.
I love great goody bags for the kids - the more elaborate and fun - the better. And, the goody bags have to contain stuff the kids will always use, and not stuff the parents will want to throw away. So....using this guide, I was in Target one day during back to school season where I always stock up on things for my toddlers...crayons, markers, etc. A box of crayons was 0.25 and a box of 8 washable markers was 0.99. At that moment I knew what the theme would be for my daughter that was turning 2 the next year. A CRAYOLA PARTY! I immediately bought 24 boxes of crayons, colored pencils and markers. And then I started the search. For paper products, I bought plates, napkins, cups, streamers, etc. in all different colors. Then I went onto Crayola.com (a great website for parents). I printed out coloring pages and created a coloring book as another gift for the goody bag. (I work full-time and was able to print the pages onto card stock and then bind them) Thanks to the Crayola website, I also found games for the party... musical chairs, but not the traditional game. Each chair had a piece of paper on it and crayons. The kids walked around the chairs and when the music stopped, every child had to sit in front of the chair and draw a picture on the paper. When the music started again, the kids got up and continued to walk around. When the music stopped, they then continued someone else's picture. What a great keepsake for my daughter from her party! We also played Bingo - again, thanks to the Crayola website, using Bingo boards they had online. Whenever a picture was pulled that was on their board, they had to color in the picture. I also had a pinata in the shape of a box of crayons. I went a little bit overboard (I go crazy for my children's birthday parties) and bought white t-shirts (in bulk) for all the kids and also got a few boxes of fabric markers. I had stencils as well, so as an activity, all the kids got to color their own t-shirts. The cake was made by a friend and was a yellow crayon. And another friend made sugar cookies and iced them to look like a box of crayola crayons. I also gave out prizes, purchased from the crayola.com website in their party section - mini chalk, stamper markers and crayola tattoos. The best thing I believe I came up with was to print the crayola invitations (also found on their website) onto card stock. I typed up the information for the party and glued it inside the invite and asked every child to color in the invitation and bring it to the party for a special prize. The kids, and adults of children too small to color, had alot of fun with this. As each child handed me their invitation at the party, I hung them on the bulletin board. Again, another great keepsake. For the goody bag itself, I purchased color-your-own bags from oriental trading company. The party was a HUGE success and everyone loved the theme. I loved it as well, and have to say that planning the next parties will be much more difficult, as this is a hard party to top!
