Red, White, and Two!
My son's birthday falls just after Independence Day, so for his second birthday we had a Red, White, and Two! party. Because he is so young, we had a simple close friends and family BBQ. Everything was red and white. The inviations were white card stock pasted onto red card stock. The envelopes were red. All the decorations were red and white: red roses with white carnations, red and white balloons, red and white streamers, etc. All the FOOD was red and white! We had "red meat" and "white meat"; strawberries and white sugar for dipping; cherry tomatoes and ranch dressing for dipping; white bread; watermelon; white potato salad; red and white M&Ms (I bought several bags of Fourth of July M&Ms and my four year old daughter separated out the blue ones). For drinks I had Big Red soda and cherry punch for the kids and Dos Equis beer for the grown-ups. Of course all the paper plates and napkins were red and white. The cake was awesome! Using a "2" cake pan (from Martha Stewart), I made a red cake (white cake recipe (Cook's Illustrated) with 2 oz of red food coloring) and white frosting. For goody bags (red and white, of course!), i found red play dough, red and white sidewalk chalk, and red and white soft mini baseballs. I also added cherry lifesavers and small bags of the red and white M&Ms.
