Construction Party For my son's 6th birthday we had a construction themed party. Prior to the party I prepared tool boxes for each child, using dollar stores as my source for tool sets and
real tool boxes purchased from Wal Mart for just $3 each. I labeled each with the child's name. I also got Hard Hats and orange vests, we labeled the hats too. I got each one a painters belt
to be worn as a tool belt. I purchased safety goggles and that completed the look. For something to build, I collected empty large appliance boxes that the local appliance store saved for me.
We hooked them all together to make tunnels, we cut lookout towers and doors. We connected the boxes together with plastic cable ties. The kids loved this! They even painted it. For
invitations I types up a sheet announcing a call for all construction workers to report to duty. Party time was labeled as "clok in time", etc. The anticipation of the party is as
much fun as the party. The kids read the list of what all would take place over and over. I used some construction clip art to dress it up.
To decorate we had a construction party theme set from Shindigz.com, and used their black gossamer to crisscross on the tables to look like roads. We put a yellow strip down the center to make it really look like a road. We live in the country and own some heavy equipment which we parked outside the barn that the tables were set up in. I got some unfinished wooden vehicles from Oriental Express and paint sets from the dollar store to use as something for the kids to do as they arrived. Once they were all there, we passed out the tool boxes and things and they dressed up. My husband then had "tool time" with them, explaining what each tool was and what is was used for. For games we played wheel barrow races, dress up relay using my husbands boots and flannel shirts, then a game of "Grease rag tag" where each child stuck a red grease rag in their back pocket and where chased by "it" who tried to grab their rag....They loved the games. The boxes made the perfect photo shoot backdrop, along with the kids in their work uniform. I used dump trucks as centerpieces for the tables, filling them with candy and gum. We went on a hayride and called it the "quittin' time work wagon. I led the kids in a few songs and we rode around the farm. We had a wonderful time and I just want to give God the glory for allowing us to be parents and to have two children. We are truly blessed and birthdays are really something to celebrate, it's not about receiving gifts, it's about being thankful for the gift of life.
