For my son's first birthday we had a construction party.
For the invitations, I printed a cute dump truck off my Print Shop and typed on it You're invited to my 1st birthday! On the inside I typed "Rumble" on over for my first birthday party on ___day and ___time. We will "dig" into pizza and cake at ____time. Hope to see you there! For the cake, I just purchased a mid-size dump truck. I made a simple "dirt cake" and put it in the back of the truck. With the leftover cake, I "dumped" it onto some wax paper and set it near the dump truck as a pile of "dirt". I covered the table with a yellow table cloth and put a thin(8 to 12 inches wide)strip of black down the center for the "road". Then I painted white dashes down the center for the center line. I made small construction signs and set them along the side of the "road". I made a mobile of all different construction vehicles, such as cement mixer, dump truck, and digger. I printed them off of my Print Shop on the computer and glued them to some colorful construction paper, cut around the images, and hung them with string from the ceiling at different levels right above the table. I purchased smaller dump truck and digger to set on the "road" as center pieces and filled the dump truck with "rocks"(chocolate chips) to add to the "dirt cake" if the guests like. In one corner I had a "Hard Hat Only" area. I made a large sign that read hard hat area and hung it from the ceiling with string. I had some hard hats sitting there and a bunch of building blocks to "build" with. I made some simple construction signs with orange fluorescent tagboard. I cut out diamond shapes and outlined them black and wrote with black marker things like: road construction ahead, detour, and men at work. If you really think about it, there are a million signs you can make. To add a little color I even made a few stop signs and yield signs. I hung them up all around the party area. I made an extra large sign and wrote welcome to_________'s construction zone! and attached it to a pole and set it inside a tall orange construction cone and set it outside. As people came in the door, they saw it. I put yellow caution tape in front of doors we were not using and across my front porch with a detour sign. I lined my sidewalk with orange cones. For the party thank you's I used the same dump truck image and typed on the outside Thank You! and on the inside I typed I really "dig" the cool gift you gave me for my birthday. Love _________.
