Construction Party - 3 year old My son is way into construction site play so that was the theme for the party. I was not happy with the cake suggestions I had come across.
I "designed" my own. I made a sheet cake with confetti cake mix (my son's choice). Then I made a double batch of brownie mix in the same sheet pan. I put the brownie on top of the confetti cake using some white frosting. Next I frosted the outside of the cake with yellow/gold frosting. I then used black licorice twists (2 at a time) placed diagonally around the edge on the yellow frosting to resemble the yellow and black construction stripes found on signs and tape. I edged the top of the cake with red tube frosting. Since the top of the cake was brownie it already looked like dirt. I added various hotwheel size construction vehicles and secured them to the cake with a little German chocolate frosting from a can (any brown frosting will do). I used graham cracker crumbs to put in the vehicles and in some piles on the cake. I also found some Lego-looking sweet tart candy at a bulk candy store that I stacked near a forklift and secured with a dab of frosting. For decorations I did the usual - construction theme plates, a few balloons, cleaned his big Tonka dump truck to hold plates and forks, etc. I also cut out some construction shaped men from cardboard. They are like the ones you see that are plastic and interlock to block and area like an elevator shaft, etc. I spray painted yellow and put black stripes and things like party zone, happy birthday, etc. Everyone thought it was real cute and real original, too.
