Cowboy Theme 3yr

For my son's 3rd birthday party, he wanted to have a cowboy theme. First, I made up invitations on tan card stock, burnt around the edges. I printed them off the computer using a wild west font and addressed the invites to the child only. Here is a template for the wording. "YEEHAW! Ya'll c'mon down to Sheriff XXX's Birthday Round-Up! Place: The (your last name) Homestead! Time: MM/DD at Xpm! We're havin' pony rides and other rootin' tootin' outside events, so wear yer cowboy gear! Bring yer maw 'n paw too! Rain date is MM/DD, call if yer not sure! Sure can't wait to see y'all!" I folded them in thirds, and tied a piece of raffia around them. I used flag stamps.  We had the party in our back yard, which is fenced in. We decorated with red, white and blue streamers and balloons. We set out a few tables and covered them with red and white checked tablecoths. We attached "cacti" to the fence, which I made by spray-painting pieces of cardboard cut out to a cactus shape. We also put out signs near the drinks and food, which said "Waterin' Hole" and "Vittles". We had bales of hay scattred around for seating. On the tables we placed miniature cacti as centerpieces. We had some easy finger-foods; BBQ chips, pretzels, unshelled peanuts, tortilla chips and salsa, bean dip, "pigs in a blanket", a veggie tray with ranch dip, and watermelon. We used red, white and blue plates, cups and napkins. We bought a few 2 liter bottles of Sprite and put enough green food coloring in to make it a nice bright green, and put it in a couple of cactus-shaped pitchers I got from Oriental Trading Company. We also had regular cans of soda in a large metal bucket, root beer and ginger ale.  For the cake, I bought a regular sheet cake and decorated it myself using decorator's icing and small plastic cowboys and horses. For the goodie bags, I used small brown paper bags with handles I found at Wal-Mart for $.50 each. I bought a package of 12 fancy 3D cowboy theme stickers, and then a couple packs of regular cowboy stickers. I decorated each bag with 1 3D sicker, the child's name, and a few regular stickers. Inside I put a sheriff badge, a bandana, licorice, peppermint candies, gold/silver coin bubblegum, a pack of crayons, a woven friendship bracelet, Jolly Ranchers, and a spinning top. (I got some wonderful things from www.orientaltradingcompany.com). For activities, we set out a kiddie pool filled with play sand. We buried little party favor-type prizes and let them dig around for them. We did the old favorite, pin the tail on the donkey. We also had a local farm bring a pony and a miniature donkey. The kids got to ride the pony and pet the donkey. This was their favorite part! We took a picture of each child either riding or petting the pony. We also took a picture of all the kids together. I used a digital camera, and printed both pictures out for each thank-you card in a sepia tone so they looked like old pictures.
