I very much wanted my son's first birthday party to be special. Even though he may not remember it, he would be able to look back at pictures and video's to see how much love and attention went to making his day special. I decided to do a cowboy/western type theme since my husband and I enjoy country line dancing and my husband is constantly wearing cowboy boots. I went to a local scrapbooking store and found paper frames with a red bandanna type pattern and also frames that looked like a barn door, complete with doors to open. I then took a snapshot of my son in an outfit I ordered off the net that was basically a blue romper with brown fringe, a rodeo number on the back and a red bandanna type bib, and his dad's cowboy hat from when he was a kid. I then made color copies of the picture, taped it to the paper frames and then taped red stock paper to the back of that. I used a hole punch to tie a bow with straw colored raffia at the top. I also used a gold marker to print the party info on the back, decorated the back with stickers and put a magnet on the back so guests could place the invitation on the fridge. I made my own cake to resemble a barnyard after a picture I saw in a magazine. The cake was chocolate with chocolate icing. I used green coconut for grass, blue sprinkles and blue sugar for a pond, crushed Oreos for dirt, pretzel sticks for a fence and placed several plastic barn animals on top. There were several children attending ranging from 6 months to 5 yrs. I bought novelty cowboy hats, red bandannas, plastic horses, plastic sheriff stars', rubber animal noses, and animal crackers for favors. I found a child sized cowboy boots at a garage sale for $2 and bought fresh cut flowers placed them in a skinny glass with water and placed the whole thing in the boot for a centerpiece. I also decorated with red and white balloons. I served salsa and chips and related type food in claypot type servingwear and hot pepper serving trays as well. I also found plates and napkins with cowboy boots on them at a local party store.  The party was a complete success. Everyone commented on all the cute things that I had done. I know that when my son is older and looking through old pictures, he'll be able to see how much he is loved.
