Sweet Cupcake Cooking Party -11yr- Decorate Aprons
Abigail in Jacksonville, FL, USA
For my sister's 11th birthday, we decided to do a fun cooking party for her and her 5 friends.
INVITATIONS: We found pretty paper and stick-on cupcakes and came up with a rhyme: Sabrina's having a birthday! It's gonna be sweet We’ll bake lots of cupcakes for our friends to eat Sprinkles and candy, and frosting by the ton We hope you can help us whip up the fun! Do you have what it takes to decorate the best Cupcakes? Then bring it on!
DECORATIONS: Since her favorite color was purple, we bought purple table cloth, and had cupcake plates, and cups. We also had a cupcake center piece on the table, and had a Happy Birthday sign hanging.
ACTIVITIES: When they came in, my grandma had sewed all of us aprons so we decorated them with iron on cupcakes, and also decorated place mats and made bracelets.
PARTY SNACKS: My mom found small individual pizzas, so we put sauce on it and added anything we wanted on them. When they were in the oven, we made fruit kabobs using: watermelon strawberries grapes pineapple cantaloupe honeydew cubed cheddar cheese Cubed deli turkey We poked holes through them using wooden skewers, but put them on bendable straws, so that the bendy side was like a handle. We then had lunch and Sabrina opened her presents.
CAKE: For cake, we didn't want to do anything traditional so we played Cupcake Wars similar to the hit TV show on Food Network. We divided them into teams of three, Sabrina picking out of a hat with all of the names of the girls, (me with my 3 year old cousin) so there were 2 teams of three and one team of two. We set a timer for 50 minutes. Before the guests arrived, my mom and I hid the toppings and flavors so that they could go on a scavenger hunt for them. As soon as they arrived with all of the toppings, we explained to them that they would be judged on taste, presentation, appearance, and creativity. They got to work adding only a few toppings into the cupcake batter to enhance the flavor.
Halfway through Cupcake Wars, my mom stopped us and told us: there is magic and mischief afoot in the kitchen. And you all will have to work fast and smart to overcome it and win. She then gave each of the teams riddles, and we had to come up with the answer. If you got it right, you were safe, and if you didn’t, you had to sit out of the competition for 5 minutes after the cupcakes were out of the oven and ready to be iced. We then put them in the oven for 20 minutes, and cooling time was 10-15 minutes. After the cupcakes were ready, my mom and aunt came to each team, which had to present their cupcake.
GAMES: While the cupcakes cooled, we played a few cooking-related games like: Oh Waiter Relay- we went outside, and split people up into two teams, the first person had to carry a cup of water on a plate from the starting line, to the designated finish and back to the starting point, and give it to the next person, who had to do the same thing. At the end of the game, the team with the greatest amount of water in their cup wins.
Food Bingo The smelling/tasting game- smell: coffee, vinegar, cinnamon, peanut butter, soy sauce; taste: berries, lemon, pickle, and butter, grape. Whoever guesses the most correctly, wins.
Blindfold the Cook- Blindfold one person and put a timer on for 30 seconds. The cook has to spoon marshmallows into one bowl into another in that amount of time. Once everyone has gone, whoever spooned the most into the other bowl, wins.
Scavenger Hunt Riddles: The more I dry, the wetter I become Stiff is my spine, my body is pale, but I’m always ready to tell a tale Some take me in the morning, some take me in the evening, but one thing you should know- when I’m ‘taken’ I don’t actually go anywhere My words number quite many (like pen, pent, and penny); my title you will discover, is explained under my cover I start with and end with an but I usually contain only one letter What’s black and white and read all over? Keys open my door, but mine only make a sound What is higher without the head than with it? What invention lets you look right through a wall? I grow shorter as I grow older my life can be measured in hours, I serve by being devoured. Thin, I am quick, Fat, I am slow, Wind is my foe
I have a face that doesn’t frown, hands that don’t wave, I have no mouth but make a familiar sound I don’t walk- but I move around. Scrape the scrapes off all the plates this machine cleans them all just great Rhymes with coaster and makes a breakfast foodI don’t go out and play, I just stay home all day, I’m nice-you might agree, but mostly your feet just rub me I have eyes, but can’t see, I can be mashed, baked, or sweet bland, rough, freckled, blemished, crisp, starchy, & firm; At one time there was a dearth of me in Ireland and people went hungry Look for a rainbow in a box If you were able, you’d add a What has four legs, a head, but doesn’t walk? Boob tube, idiot box, eye, and telly are names for this machine. Oprah, House, and C.S.I. on it are weekly seen. The speed of life has made this furniture a thing of fables, But there were times when families once ate around these tables.
This box is mostly filled with things that rarely bring you glee like bills, and junk, and other stuff you'd rather never see. It seems our clothes just keep returning to this same machine. At least they're better than the things the ancients used to clean. Up and down, and up and down you climb these every day. You've likely seen the clue on these, but passed it anyway. When couples are well organized they can park a car in here, but otherwise it’s full of junk and not one inch is clear. Communicate with family, research, shop, and play games. Since this invention swept the globe, our lives have really changed. When your tummy starts to whine and it just won’t be quiet, get something from this chilly box and you will satisfy it. What do baby ghosts wear on Halloween? Red and shiny and delicious to eat. I even made Snow White fall fast asleep
