My daughter loves the music on her Radio Disney CD and decided she wanted a Retro party when she turned 7.  I made her invitations using a short rhyme Flower power, peace, and love, disco all the way.  We're going to have a groovy time for Allie's 7th birthday.  I used word art in Microsoft Word to spell out RETRO with a rainbow of colors in the fill.  I matted the invitations onto bright orange card stock and used groovy daisy eyelets to secure them.  On the day of the party, we let the girls dance to 70s music while we waited for all the guests to arrive. Since the party was two weeks after Easter, I bought lots of purple cellophane at the after-Easter sales and covered the windows in our basement to make it look more like a disco. We also borrowed two disco lights from our neighbors. We hung Flower Power beach balls and tie-dyed teddy bears (found at the dollar store) from the ceiling with fishing line.  When all the girls had arrived, they each were asked to choose two pieces of fleece fabric I had cut to cover a pillow form (also found at the dollar store).  The fabric was cut into strips along the sides so the girls could tie the two pieces together. I bought most of the fabric on E-bay so it had a retro look û tie dye, groovy flowers, even fabric with peace signs and VW beetles. After they finished, we ate lunch Cheese Whiz on round Ritz crackers, pizza rolls, and chips and dip (all fun food from my childhood). We gave my daughter a spin art machine for her birthday, so it was set up with lots of paint and paper. The girls had fun playing that and dancing in the basement while we cleared the table for the next activity.  I found a pattern on the internet for string art.  I made the boards the week before the party. I spray-painted black one piece of particle board for each guest.  Then I made copies of a circle pattern for each board and hammered the nails in, leaving the paper with the circle and numbers on it so the girls could easily find which nail to wrap the string around.  I typed out the directions for each layer (i.e., Layer 1: nail 2 to nail 18, etc.) and gave them to the girls when they sat down for this craft.  We had lots of crochet thread on hand so they could choose the colors they wanted to use. Since we were getting near the end of the party, some girls only had time for one layer, while other finished two or three.  After they had all finished one round, we put the string art aside and cut the birthday cake. I used white cake mix with the blue and pink colors inside (usually out around Easter), white icing, and three colors of frosting spray to make it look tie-dyed.  After cake and ice cream, many of the girls kept their parents waiting while they worked on their string art. They had a lot of fun with it.  We sent each girl home with a Flower Power beach ball and tie-dyed bear we cut down from the basement ceiling, dip and lick candy (popular in the 70s), a CD of 70s music we burned with Allie's Retro Party and daisy stickers on the cover, their spin art, fleece pillow, and string art.  Most everything we bought for the party came from the dollar store or E-bay (or we had it on hand, like nails, board, thread, and the spin art machine), so the girls had lots of fun and some great crafts to take home at very little expense to us.
