Ballerina Tea Party:
For her 5th birthday my daughter decided that she wanted a ballerina teaparty. We bought puple flower-printed paper and I printed out invitations on my computer. They said: "Put on your tutus and join us for a Ballerina Teaparty. We'll eat dainty cakes, dance around and look fabulous doing it!" It then said for the girls to wear their favorite dance attire. We decorated with pink and purple tablewear from Big Lots and lots of pink and purple balloons. Each place setting at our tea table had a shimmering tiarra (purchased from the clearance bin at Factory Card Outlet) and party favors - ballerina tutu tubes from the Bright Ideas (M&Ms) website. We made them by collecting empty toilet paper tubes, wrapping them in pink tissue paper and attaching pink tulle around the middles with double stick tape. We then tied pink satin ribbons around the "waists" of the tutus and filled them with ballerina slipper stickers, flower-shaped lollipops and little bags of Goldfish crackers and M&Ms. Each tutu tube was placed on a mini ballerina-shaped notebook (so it looked like the tube was wearing slippers). We tied several pink and purple balloons out on the front porch and had a battery powered bubble blower (on clearance from the Disney Store) on the step. That way each guest was greeted with a shower of bubbles blowing on the breeze (the girls and mommies loved it!). I printed out coloring pages and paper dolls from the Angelina Ballerina website and the guests were able to sit at a couple of little tables and color while waiting for everyone to arrive (ballet music played in the background). Once all of the guests were there we gathered everyong in the living room and I told the girls that they were going to be beautiful ballerinas today. I read them DK's Sparkling Ballerina book. It shows a little ballerina "getting pretty" and we did everything she did in the book: we put on our ballet clothes, put on our sparkly tiarras (from the table), got our magic wands (foam wand kits purchased from Target) and finished by "getting sparkly" by spritzing the girls with Ballerina Strawberry Shortcake glitter spray (also purchased at Target). I told the girls that now we would get ready for our dance class and that we needed to get pretty. We used my daughter's vanity to let the girls get their nails painted (by my sister and myself) with glittery nailpolish, put on their lipstick (little party favor lip glosses) and adorn themselves with ballerina "bling" (plastic necklaces and candy jewelry). After we were gorgeous I led the girls in a little dance class, usuing more mainstream "dances" like I'm a Little Teapot, Ring Around the Rosy, If You're Happy and You Know it and the Hokey Pokey. Then we did a flower ballet - I talked the girls through a ballet story of being flowers and butterflies in the sun. I had planned on playing Musical Chairs and Ballerina Says but we ran out of time. By then it was time for the teaparty. I had ordered mini teacups and saucers from Birthday Express and we served the girls pink lemonade, teacookies, cake and ice cream. We finished the party by opening gifts. Each girl took home a goodie bag with her tutu tube, tiarra, magic wand, coloring pages, teacups and notebook. By finding things on sale/clearance, borrowing tables and chairs and using my mother, sister and friend as helpers we had a lovely party that came off pretty cheap (under $100). My daughter and her guests had a wonderful time (as did the mommies)!
