Dinosaur Fun Party 6yr

For our son's sixth birthday party, we hosted a Dinosaur Fun party.  The invitations were printed on a long bone cut from ivory cardstock and said Come roar with the dinosaurs...Zacharyosaurus is 6!" Each bony invitation had a piece of camoflauge ribbon tied around the middle of the bone. Most were folded and placed in lime green envelopes to be mailed but a few were hand delivered unfolded...way cute! Our decorations included a big dino wall mural as well as a "pin the horn on the triceratops" game ordered online from The Dinosaur Corporation.  They have anything and everything dinosaur. We hung brown and lime green streamers around the door ways. Big leaves were cut from dark green construction paper and hung in the doorway corners and across the top of the doorways to make our home appear jungle like. My husband made a large yellow and black dino crossing sign for the front door from posterboard.  Helium filled balloons in dark green lime green orange yellow and purple were added throughout the living room and kitchen.  Our table was covered with brown paper and my son's collection of dinosaurs (including one that roars) in all sizes was used as the centerpiece. There were a few dinosaur "fossils" placed on the table as well. We planned both indoor and outdoor activities for the kiddos. As kids arrived we had little dinosaur activity books out for them to work in with crayons.  I copied several pages from a dino coloring book reduced the copy size and created a little 4"x5" book with a green construction paper cover for each guest.  That way they had something to do as they waited for all of their friends to arrive. They also spent a little time trying to figure out which plastic dinosaur on the table made each of the fossils they found on the table as well.  Once most kids were there we broke into three groups and began our party stations.  One station was making dinosaur fossils from coffee ground playdough (I found this quick easy recipe on line!) and little plastic dinosaurs. The kids rolled a piece of playdough into a ball and then patted it out into a pancake on a piece of aluminum foil.  Then they pressed a small dino in the center of the dough and carefully lifted it out leaving an impression of that dinosaur.  Each "fossil" was then placed on a cookie tray and stuck into a 200˚ oven for the remainder of the party. The second station was a game called The Bone Drop.  For this game we had six mini rawhide dogbones and two large cans...one fat and one skinny...each decorated with brown paper and cut out bones. The kids took turns sitting on their knees backward on a chair holding the bones over the back of the chair trying to drop them into the cans. The object was to see how many bones they could get into the can.  At the third station the kids played "Pin the Horn on the Triceratops" game that I mentioned earlier. Each time the game was played the winner from that group received a small dinosaur play set from the Dollar Store. Each station was manned with at least one helper and took about fifteen minutes to complete then we would switch activities until everyone had completed all three stations.  Then we moved outside for a couple of large group games. First we played Dino Tag.  There were two children chosen to be IT dinosaurs and all the other guests became regular dinosaurs. If IT tagged you you became extinct and had to join other extinct dinos in the dinosaur graveyard on the patio.  Then we broke up into two teams for a Dino Egg Hatching relay. In the middle of the backyard we dumped about fifty inflated balloons with little plastic dinosaurs stuffed inside.  The first person in each line ran to the nesting grounds selected an egg and ran down to their hatching spot (marked by a helper) and sat on their egg. Once it popped they hunted for their dinosaur and raced back to their line tagging the next person. This relay ended when all of the eggs were hatched.  Each child got to keep the dinosaurs that they belped hatch. After that we took a few group pictures and headed inside for cake and ice cream. Our cake purchased from a local bakery was decorated with a dinosaur design from the party napkins (Prehistoric Party...also purchased with the wall mural).  We served cookies and cream ice cream and lemonade as well.  After we opened presents the birthday boy passed out treat bags to his guests and thanked them for coming to the party.  Each guest left with a dinosaur grabber (Oriental Trading) a couple more plastic dinos and a package of dinosaur fruit gummies as well as the fossils they had made and their dino activity books. Everyone had a dino-riffic time!!"
