For my son's 6th birthday party, we had a dinosaur theme, at the pavilion of a local park/playground. The children rotated through several different activities, and played on the playground at
other times. Each child had a turn activating a volcano which we made with painted papier mache on a lampshade base, using baking soda, white vinegar (with red food coloring added), and a
drop of dish soap to prolong the lava flow (a tube/funnel thing was inserted in the lampshade, with a dish at the bottom). They made fossil imprints to take home, with modeling compound (the
kind that hardens), colored with food coloring (ours was white) (green/brown) using plastic dinosaur figures for footprints, skin prints; leaves, shells, etc. We had a dinosaur nest area,
where each child was able to "hatch" a dino egg (an inflated balloon with a small dinosaur figure pushed in before inflating), by sitting on it, keeping the baby dino (this was
hilarious, and the kids' favorite activity, I think!). We made a pin the teeth on the T-rex (casting a shadow from one of his figures onto large paper, with a flashlight, tracing and
coloring). We had planned a fossil dig in the beach volleyball area, but it was occupied, so we just packed the fossils into each goody bag (small, but real fossils - available at fossil
shows, inexpensively in grab bag form). Also included in goody bags: gummy dinos/dino fruit snacks (grocery store), dino pencils and 3-D rulers, dino stickers, bubbles with dino sticker over
label, etc. (a la party store). We made a pinata in the shape of a dino egg, taping two balloons together as a base; my son painted it his own way. We used up all our energy on the
activities, so just ordered a dino cake from a bakery, and had the usual party snacks. The party lasted about 2 1/2 to 3 hours - we all had a lot of fun!!
