Dinosaur Birthday Party -- This party was a HUGE success for my 4-year-old son. I used "Land Before Time" invitations, plates, napkins, etc., but any kind can be
used. I decorated with coordinated color balloons and streamers.
I cut out a stencil of a dinosaur footprint from a poster board and painted dinosaur tracks down the driveway toward the backyard (using washable poster paint diluted with water). I made one paper mache "dinosaur egg" (using a small balloon for the mold) for each child and filled it with a beany dinosaur, dinosaur stickers and tattoos, and dinosaur gummies. I spray painted them white and then painted a top coat with diluted poster paint. I baked my own sheet cake and had Stop & Shop decorate it (for only $5 or so)as a green forest with a blue river running through it. I added palm trees and plastic dinosaurs. For activities I had the kids build a volcano in the sandbox and decorate it with plastic palm trees and dinosaurs. I tucked a small jar in the top of the volcano -- 1/4 filled with baking soda. When the kids were ready they poured in vinegar dyed red with food color and voila -- erupting volcano. (Have extra baking soda and vinegar on hand -- they wanted to do it again and again!) They also played with "primordial ooze" (slime made with white glue, borax, water and food color) and plastic dinosaurs on a plastic tablecloth I spread on the ground. The biggest hit was the hunt for the dinosaur eggs. Each child was given a safari hat and plastic binoculars and then they went on the expedition in the backyard. (Adorable photo, by the way, with all the kids peering through their binoculars.) I also sent each child home with a small tub of primordial ooze.
