My 6 year was WILD about dinosaurs, here is the party I planned for him.
Invitations , thank you notes, plates, cups, forks, napkins, table cloth, crepe paper and balloons were all purchased at a party store. It was a nice day, so all was outside! Decorations were up and party table was set.As guests arrived, we had snacks laid out. Dino shaped chicken nuggets and lava bites (Pizza Rolls). Easy finger food! Went well with the Dino punch. M&Ms candy to munch on too. We encouraged parents to stay. (A.K.A. help!) They actually ate most of the food. The kids were so busy! Two weeks ahead we made a paper machet T-Rex pinata out of a baloon, some toilet paper tubes and masking tape and newspaper. The birthday boy and his younger brother helped paint. We also made a meteorite, to be used in a game like hot potato. (we stuffed a glow-in-the-dark dino in it as a prize for the winner.) While we were at it, we made a giant, paper machet volcano too. This we used to keep big" prizes for the winners of the games. We called it the volcano of mysterious prizes. Pinata went first. It was stuffed with dino gummy snacks we had one "big" winner and EVERYONE got to choose a toy from the "small" prize bowl. We had about 8 kids at the party and stuck 8 larger prizes into the volcano. If a child had already won a "big" prize he/she could pick a little prize out of a bowl we had set aside. (This smaller bowl was great! It kept the kids busy. After they had a turn at a game they could pick a prize from the bowl.) Besides the "Hot Meteroite" game we had Dino Stomp (Tied a ribbon to each kids ankle then to a baloon. They had to try and pop the other balloons and keep theirs safe. We had a Dino Hatch relay game. I stuffed baloons with squishy little dinos and blew them up. I had the kids race to the "Hatching Grounds" find an egg "hatch" it by popping it with their bottoms find the baby dino inside and race back to the finish line. I drew a Stegasaurus on some poster board to use in "Pin the Plate on the Stegasaurus" The boys colored it in with markers. Each kid had a plate with his/her name on it. For a cake I made an ice-cream cake with brownies on the bottom and middle. On top I put hot fudge and stuck dinos in like they were sinking in tar pits. Everyone got a cupcake with a little plastic dino on it. As an activity we had a Dino Dig in the garden. (Fortunately our garden was done in Sept.) A sand box would have worked too. Each child grabbed a bucket and shovel (Late summer I found them on clearance for less than a dollar.) and ran into the garden to see what they could find. Two days ahead I took sand cornstarch and a little water mixed it all up with a handful of plastic skeleton dinos and let harden in little plastic baggies. Once set I removed from baggies and carefully burried them in the garden by putting a handful of dirt over them. Once found the kids had fun breaking them apart. (They were rather fragile.) We had also burried larger plastic dinos enough for each kid to find at least one. My husband boiled some bones he got from the butcher. He burried those in the garden too. If you found one of those you could pick another prize from the volcano. The kids had a blast. This kept them busy until parents picked them up. Anyone who had not won a "Big" prize got to pick one out of the Volcano of mysterious Prizes before they went home. All of the loot went home in the buckets. All prizes were purchased from US Toy Company a couple of weeks in advance and were relatively inexpensive. Seems like a lot but all ran smoothly and party took appx. two to two and a half hours."
