For my daughter Katie's 5th birthday, we decided to have a Princess Party theme.
We sent out Disney Princess invitations, inviting all princesses to come dressed in "princess attire" (pretty dresses, play tiaras, etc.) Mom and Nana dressed up, too, in bridesmaid/ cocktail dresses to be "fairy godmothers". The princesses arrived and sat down at the table to decorate their wands and crowns with sticker "jewels" (no paint or glue since girls were dressed up.) The paper crowns were purchased from dollar/party stores; wands were made by gluing/taping thin pieces of wood dowling (craft store) and pre-cut silver and gold bristol board stars (cut out by mom using star-shaped stencil.) Tables were decorated with purple disposable tablecloths and metallic party confetti in stars, hearts and moons (Walmart/dollar store). Lunch included cookie-cutter sandwiches (shapes: hearts, flowers, etc.) made with p.b. & jam, cream cheese & jam, ham & cheese, p.b. & honey; cheesies & chips; princess punch (pink lemonade poured into mini plastic wine glasses - dollar store!) Birthday cake was a 3-D castle, decorated using different shaped and coloured ice cream cones as turrets, groups of round lollipops and gumdrops as decorations, and toothpicks with silver tin foil flags. The princesses were told that the King's treasure had been stolen and they had to hunt it down for him: Princesses were shown the empty treasure chest (wooden, decorated with gold foil wrap) and collected gold chocolate coins that had been scattered around the room. After the treasure was all collected, we divided it up and placed it into the loot bags. "Pin the crown on the princess" was a big hit game: we purchased a poster at Walmart that had 6 cameos on it, each with a different Disney princess. With remaining silver and gold bristol board, I cut out many crowns and wrote each girl's name on the back. We used sticky-tac to get the crowns to stick without ripping the poster - also, we could play as many times as we wanted to. Girls were blind-folded with a pretty scarf (only if they were comfortable)- they loved this game! We also played "Pass the glass slipper" (hot potato) with a plastic dress-up shoe. Girls were in a circle, passing the shoe, to songs from the Shrek soundtrack. I engineered it to have every princess win a prize at one of the games - prizes included disney princess socks, stickers, colouring book, body glitter, lip balm, etc. Girls also enjoyed just dancing to Shrek soundtrack! Towards the end, Nana read the girls "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty". Loot bags included gold chocolate coins, princess stickers and a home-made CD with approx. 20 songs- all from Disney princess movies and Shrek soundtrack. Cover insert had picture of disney princesses and read "Katie's Princess Songs, Thanks for celebrating Katie's 5th birthday! This was a big hit party favour with kids and parents!
