For my daughter's 10th birthday we had an 80's style PROM party! The invitations included information about the Prom theme, requesting the girls come wearing their mom's old 80's style prom/bridesmaid dresses (I also explained we would have extra's in case they were needed. I had asked my sister in law's and friends to have theirs available if needed, which they were all excited to do!). My daughter wore my prom dress from 1986! We were thrilled with the response.  I had 22 girls and 5 brave boys come. (the boys were in shirts and ties) We decorated our local community center in pink, purple and silver streamers, had a disco ball, white christmas lights, lots of balloons etc.  We had silver metallic streamers across the entrance, which we used as a back drop and took photo's of each person standing in the middle of balloon bouquets (typical prom photo props). My daughter was the prom princess with the tiara and sash.  They all had so much fun being dressed up. The craft was making wrist corsages out of silk flowers, ribbon and tulle. I had 80's dance music along with dances such as the chicken dance, electric slide, bunny hop and an updated version of the "stroll" using the "hamster dance" music. The kids made 2 lines, facing each other. As the music played the 2 kids at the top of the line danced down the middle, doing whatever they wanted while the other kids clapped to the music, and got back in line at the end, then the next pair started down the middle.  This was a favorite.  And it was nice for all levels of dance ability and was requested over and over. The organized dance/games got everyone into the swing of things. We had the usual snacks, but also had punch in little cups, little napkins, nuts/mints at the tables.  The cake was decorated with a real tiara and a frosting sash that said "Happy Birthday Prom Princess Alexandra"  During the gift opening I had each guest sit by my daughter while she opened their gift.  It can be such a chaotic time.  I got nice photo's of my daughter and her friends interacting during each gift opening.  My daughter and several of her friends had just been in a ballet dance recital and gave an impromptu performance to the song "Ballerina Girl, by Lionel Richie for the rest of the girls, which really made it special. We printed copies of the "prom" photo's and gave them as thank you notes. It really was a simple party to put together, and has been the least expensive one yet!
