Purse Party

September 2005

Purse Party for a 2 year old girl  My daughter loved purses, so for her second birthday she had a purse party. I made invitation from mini-craft bags.  I trimmed each bag with scalloped scissors and added  decorations to make it look like a purse. I added rafia handles, as well.  Inside each "purse" I put a small envelope with the written invitation inside. The invitation read as follow's:  "Miss Julia ________ will soon be two years old, and we are having a party to celebrate. So put on your pearls, grab your purse and come join us for a party that is sure to be a handbag full of fun!  Please be sure to bring your favorite purse ...even if it is just this pretty paper one." (Date, time and place were all listed below.)  All of  the invitation purses were hot pink with lime green accents. The actual worded invitation was printed on white paper with hot pink ink and then double matted on lime green and hot pink paper, before being folded, placed in the envelope and put into the purse.  I made the cake.  It was a simple yellow cake baked in a rectangle pan. I iced the cake with white buttercream frosting.  Then I rolled out fondant (which was colored  pink, green and yellow) and cut/formed purse shapes. I place the fondant purses on  top of the frosted cake. Then I piped the words "Happy 2nd Birthday, Julia" and a few decorative swirls on top of the cake, using a green icing. The table was decorated wtih a lime green cloth and hot pink streamers. In the center of the table, I put a bouquet of small pink roses and the cake.  We also had balloons  and streamers decorating our house, using our theme colors of hot pink and lime  green.  For the paper goods, I purchased solid hot pink plates, napkins and cups. As  this was a middle of the afternoon party, we only served birthday cake, ice cream and  pink lemonade.    As the guests were just two years old, we only had one activity in addition to opening  gifts and eating birthday cake, and that was a dress-up time. I got out all sorts of dress-up hats, shoes, scarves and, of course, purses!  I put a full-length mirror out so that the little party guests could see themselves all decked out in their finery.  This  proved to be a huge hit with all of our guests!  I gave each guest a several items to take home in their purses:  a key ring with a blank key, a fancy pencil, a small notepad, lip gloss, and a small amount of candy.   The tiny girls all loved taking home their purses filled with new items! Finally, my main gift to the birthday girl was a copy of the book "The Big Green  Pocketbook," which tells the story of a little girl who spends the day on an outing with  her mother and fills up her purse with all kinds of treasures from the day.  I added in  the box with this book a green purse, filled wtih all the same items the little girl in the  story collects. It was a fun gift for my daughter, and she loves looking through her  own green pocketbook and finding all the treasures as we read this book together.
