My sons birthday falls four days before Halloween.
This year we had a Costume Party. Each person, including the adults, came in costume. We played pin the nose on the pumpkin, the limbo, tried to drop ghosts made from tissue paper and clothespins into a wide-mouth jar and had a batty bean bag toss. I made the cake and it was the same thing my son was for Halloween, a dog. The party was really fun and the adults even enjoyed dressing up. It was a great way for the children to wear their costumes for more than once or twice.
