Egyptian Party

February 2008

Lydia in North Little Rock

My daughter was studying egypt in school and really wanted an Egyptian birthday party. I started looking about two months prior to the party and the only thing I was able to find were some Egyptian Cuffs and Collars from Oriental Trading Company. I had to get creative. I printed off some invitations from my computer that read Tell your mummy...to bring you to Rainy's Birthday party" I then stained the paper using teabags so that it would resemble papyrus. I burnt the edges with a lighter (use EXTREME caution.) Then I rolled the paper up and tied it together with gold string complete with gold beads on the ends. For the decorations I found a lot of gold streamers and door hangers from my local party supply store. I decorated a table with toy snakes and camels. I placed homemade mummies (paper mache action figures) and pyramids (gold spray painted foam cut into a triangle) around the party room. We played three games. The first was "Mummification" where I arranged the kids in teams of two and gave them an infinite supply of toilet paper (this was a huge hit.) We also played a game of Pin the Beard on King Tut. A friend of mine painted a poster board to look like King Tut and then made "beards" out of construction paper with each childs name on it. We had a pyramid pinata. I bought a Superman S pinata from a party supply store and then took it to an airbrush shop and had them airbrush a pyramid with sand at the bottom onto the S. I attempted to make a pyramid cake from magazine directions but failed miserably so I opted for a Walmart cake. I took a picture of King Tut (they will NOT use a copyright picture) and had them make half a sheet cake with gold trim icing and King Tut's picture printed on it. My daughter wore a Cleopatra costume we made out of gold material. We took foam board and cut it into something that resembled a donut then painted it and glued jewels onto it for the collar. For the goody bags I managed to find some woven gold and black pencil holders and filled them with gold pencils gold slinkies mardi gras style beads fake gold coins toy snakes toy frogs and candy rolo's (they have gold wrappers). I had songs like "Walk like an Egyptian" and "King Tut" (from a kids bop cd) playing. The party was a big hit. It has been 3 weeks and my daughter says the kids at school still talk about it.   "
